Low floor monocoque bodies and composite panels
A low floor transit coach does not have a truck frame with a body sitting on it. The structure is a welded cage, and the exterior panels are part of how that cage carries load. Drop the floor height to get a single step entry and the designer loses the depth under the passengers, which means the sidewall and the roof rail pick up work the floor used to do. That is why a side impact on a low floor coach so often shows up as a distorted door aperture two bays away from the point of contact.
Modern side panels are commonly fiber reinforced composite rather than steel or aluminum. They resist the small parking lot dings that used to dent a metal skin, but they fail differently: a hard hit produces a starred crack and delamination behind the visible break, and the damaged area is always larger than the paint suggests. Sounding the panel out beyond the visible crack is the first thing done on the estimate, before any figure gets written.
Bonded panels against bolted access panels
Not every panel on a coach comes off the same way, and confusing the two costs money. Bolted access panels around the wheel wells, the battery bay and the equipment compartments are designed for removal, with captive fasteners and a gasket. Bonded panels are structural adhesive to the cage, and removing one means cutting the bond line, cleaning the flange down to substrate, and rebonding to the adhesive manufacturer method with the correct primer and open time.

- Usually a symptom, not the injury. Something moved the cage. Check the aperture diagonals before touching the panel.

Ramp aperture, kneeling air bags and mounted equipment
The wheelchair ramp door aperture is the most dimensionally sensitive opening on a transit coach. The ramp is a rigid plate that has to deploy through a frame that stays square within a tight tolerance, and a coach that took a corner hit can latch its ramp door perfectly while the ramp itself binds at full extension. Every ramp aperture repair here ends with a full deployment cycle under load, not a visual check.
The kneeling function drops the entry side using suspension air bags. After structural work near the front axle, bag mounts and brackets get inspected and the kneel is cycled with the coach on the ground, because a bracket that was tweaked in the impact will let the coach kneel but not return level. Air bag suspension repair is posted at $500 to $4,500 across 2 to 18 hours.
Two more things ride on the body and get disturbed by collision work. The destination sign housing is a sealed enclosure through the front cap; its gasket and drain path have to be reinstated or the sign fogs. Bumper energy absorbers are consumable: they are designed to crush at low speed and they do not spring back, so an absorber that has taken a hit is replaced rather than reused, even when the bumper cover looks acceptable.
Inside, farebox and stanchion bases bolt through the floor into reinforcement plates. Anything that disturbs the floor near those bases means the backing plates get inspected and the fasteners renewed. A stanchion that flexes under a passenger pull is a floor problem, not a stanchion problem.

Can a bonded composite side panel be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A shallow scuff or a small chip in the gel surface is repairable. A starred crack with delamination behind it gets sectioned out and replaced, because filler over a delaminated area lifts within a season and the repair has to be done twice.
Why does the whole side get sprayed for one damaged bay?
A slab side has no body line to end a repair against. Cutting the finish at an arbitrary point leaves a visible edge, so the repair is blended across adjacent bays and cleared full length to keep gloss continuous down the coach.
Do you test the wheelchair ramp after aperture repair?
Yes. The ramp is cycled through full deployment and stow under load, not just checked visually. An aperture that is out of square by a small amount will let the door close normally while the ramp binds partway out.
Is a crushed bumper energy absorber reusable?
No. Absorbers are designed to deform once and stay deformed. A unit that has taken a low speed hit is replaced during the bumper repair even if the outer cover cleaned up, because it will not protect the front structure a second time.
