Representative Repair Case Studies

The examples on this page are composites. Each one describes a job type OCRV Center performs routinely, assembled from the common pattern across many similar files, with figures drawn from the posted ballpark ranges. None of them describes a specific named customer or a specific vehicle, and none should be read as one.

Why are these presented as composites?

Because the alternative would be fiction dressed as fact. A case study that names a customer, a vehicle and a date implies a specific verifiable event, and once a shop starts inventing those, nothing else it publishes can be trusted either.

What is genuinely useful about a case study is the pattern: how a particular kind of damage develops, what teardown usually exposes behind it, which operations end up on the estimate, roughly how the hours distribute, and where the file tends to stall. That pattern is real, it repeats across many vehicles, and it can be described honestly without attaching a name to it.

So every example below is assembled from the common shape of many similar files. Every dollar figure and hour range comes from the published ballpark table on the prices page. Where a number is a plausible midpoint within a published range rather than a fixed price, it is described that way.

Composite one: rear corner impact on a Class A coach

Presenting damage. A rear corner struck at low speed, typically in a campground or a fuel island. Visible damage is a cracked and pushed rear cap, a scuffed and dented sidewall panel over roughly three feet, and a rear taillight housing broken loose.

What teardown normally exposes. This is the file type where the estimate changes most. Behind the visible skin damage the lamination bond has usually released well beyond the impact area, the framing tube behind the cap flange is often cracked, and the roof to sidewall seam frequently opened at the corner without any external sign. Slide opening geometry gets checked immediately, because a corner impact that racked the opening turns a body repair into a structural one.

Typical operations. Fiberglass cap repair at $750 to $12,000, delamination repair at $1,500 to $20,000 where the bond released, structural correction if the opening moved, color match blending at $500 to $5,000, and reseal work at the roof seam. Interior access hours appear if the wall has to be worked from inside.

Where it stalls. Supplement approval, almost always. The initial estimate written on visible damage is a fraction of the teardown scope, and the supplement is filed with photographs of every concealed area and moisture readings if the seam admitted water.

Composite two: long term water intrusion in a travel trailer

Presenting complaint. A stain on an interior wall or ceiling, a soft area underfoot, or a smell the owner cannot place. Frequently the owner reports it appeared recently. It almost never did.

What evaluation finds. A $150 systems evaluation with moisture mapping produces a grid of readings that show extent and entry path. The usual entry points are a window frame where the butyl has aged out, a roof penetration where lap sealant has cracked, or a termination bar that lifted. The wet area is typically several times larger than the visible stain because luan wicks water laterally.

Typical operations. Water damage restoration and subfloor replacement at $750 to $15,000, delamination repair where the bond released, window and frame reseal at $250 to $3,500, roof recoat and reseal at $750 to $4,500 or membrane replacement at $3,500 to $18,000 depending on membrane condition, and flooring replacement at $750 to $9,500.

The hard conversation. Coverage. Policies pay for sudden covered events and decline gradual deterioration, and a slowly failed sealant sits squarely in the declined column. The dated moisture record and photographs are what any coverage argument gets built from, which is why bringing it in early matters far more than owners expect.

Composite three: slide room failure on a fifth wheel

Presenting complaint. The slide will not extend, extends unevenly, or binds and stops partway. Often the owner has already cycled it repeatedly trying to work it loose, which usually makes the mechanical situation worse.

What diagnosis finds. Three broad families. Control and synchronization faults, where motors are out of phase or a controller has lost its reference. Mechanical faults, where a gear rack, rail, ram or roller has worn or bent. Structural faults, where the slide room itself or its opening has moved, usually from water damage in the floor or a previous impact.

Typical operations. Slide out mechanism service at $500 to $8,500 across 3 to 35 hours, seal replacement at $400 to $3,000, topper replacement at $450 to $1,800, and slide room rebuild and structural repair at $1,500 to $7,500 where the room itself has failed. Diagnosis at $285 comes first because the family determines everything after it.

Where it stalls. Parts, on older units. A discontinued motor or controller converts an ordering task into an adaptation decision, and that is a conversation with the owner rather than a shop decision.

Composite four: delivery van fleet with accumulated damage

Presenting situation. A fleet operator with several cargo vans carrying a mix of parking lot damage, sliding door faults, worn cargo interiors and faded or peeling graphics. No single unit is badly damaged. Collectively the fleet looks tired and one or two units are close to unusable.

What the assessment produces. A per unit condition list and, more importantly, a sequencing plan. With a fleet, the order units return in is a business decision rather than a repair decision, so the plan is built around route coverage instead of around what is easiest to schedule.

Typical operations. Van collision repair and refinish at $1,500 to $40,000 on the worst units, sliding door repair at $400 to $3,500, cargo floor and liner install at $400 to $4,500, shelving and racking at $750 to $7,500, fleet graphics and vinyl wrap at $1,500 to $9,500, decal removal at $400 to $3,000, and driver assistance recalibration at $275 to $1,800 on units with body work near sensors.

What the operator actually values. Honest dates, not optimistic ones, and a clear statement of which units are quick and which are waiting on parts. Fleet files taught this shop more about scheduling discipline than any other category of work.

Composite five: full refinish on an older motorhome

Presenting situation. An owner with a structurally sound coach whose paint has oxidized, whose clear coat is failing across the roof line and upper sides, and whose original decal graphics have cracked and lifted. Often this follows a decision to keep the vehicle rather than replace it.

What assessment covers. Substrate condition first, because paint over a failing surface is money spent twice. That means checking the cap for gelcoat crazing, the sidewalls for any lamination movement, the roof to sidewall seam, and all sealant terminations. Refinishing a coach that needs sealing work first is the wrong order.

Typical operations. Full paint refinish at $5,000 to $35,000 across 40 to 250 hours, decal and graphics replacement at $500 to $5,500 or decal removal and reapplication at $400 to $3,000, fiberglass cap repair where gelcoat has crazed at $750 to $12,000, and roof recoat and reseal at $750 to $4,500 if the roof is being addressed in the same visit.

Scheduling reality. This is booth work and it occupies a block. On a shop running 50 to 100 paint jobs a month, a full coach respray gets scheduled rather than improvised, which is why long distance owners are asked to arrive on a date rather than whenever suits.

Composite six: commercial box truck after a dock incident

Presenting damage. A box truck backed into a dock at an angle, peeling the aluminum roof rail, buckling the upper side panel, and damaging the roll up door track so the door binds. The cab and chassis are untouched.

Why this file behaves differently. Downtime has a daily revenue cost, which changes the arithmetic entirely. An operator will frequently authorize a faster and more expensive path that a private owner would decline, and body and chassis separate cleanly on commercial units, so a damaged box does not put a sound truck at risk of being written off.

Typical operations. Box and cargo body repair at $750 to $15,000, roll up and swing door service at $400 to $4,500, reflective marking replacement at $250 to $1,200, and refinish or graphics work where the repair crosses a lettered panel.

What matters at delivery. That the door operates correctly under load, that the roof rail is sealed rather than just straightened, and that the unit goes back into service without a second visit. Questions we get asked

Are these based on actual repairs?

They are based on patterns across many actual repairs, which is not the same as describing one. Each composite reflects how a job type genuinely develops in this shop, but no example refers to a specific customer, vehicle or file, and none should be read as a claim about a particular person's repair.

Why not publish real customer stories with names?

Because doing it honestly requires permission, verification and enough detail to be identifiable, and doing it dishonestly is fabrication. Composites give you the useful part, the pattern of how a job develops, without any invented specifics. Public reviews on independent platforms are where individual customer accounts belong.

Will my repair follow one of these patterns?

Probably loosely, if your damage matches one of these types. What varies most is what teardown exposes, since concealed damage is the single largest source of divergence between two jobs that looked identical from outside. That is why teardown authorization exists and why supplements are routine.

Can I see documentation from a job like mine?
