How This Shop Came To Specialize
Specializing was a capacity decision before it was a marketing one. Oversized vehicles kept arriving at shops that could not physically take them, so this facility was built around door height, booth length and structural equipment instead of passenger car throughput. Publishing the full rate card came later, for the same reason: the alternative was quoting differently to every caller.
Why specialize at all?
Because the alternative was watching the same conversation repeat. A coach owner calls a body shop, describes a rear corner impact, gets an appointment, drives forty minutes, and discovers at the gate that the rig is four feet too tall for the door. Or worse, does not discover it, because the shop takes the assignment anyway and quietly sublets the work to somebody nobody vetted.
That pattern is structural, not anecdotal. Passenger car body repair is a volume business optimized around cycle time, and every piece of equipment in a conventional shop reflects that: door height, bay depth, lift design, booth length, even the height of the mixing bench. None of it scales up. A forty five foot vehicle is not a large car, it is a building on a chassis, and repairing it correctly requires a different set of assumptions from the floor up.
So the choice was to build for the vehicles nobody else could take. That meant giving up the steady, profitable, predictable flow of insurance funded passenger car work that keeps most body shops solvent, and betting instead on a category with longer files, harder parts sourcing and far more complicated claims. It is a worse business on a spreadsheet and a much better one in practice, because the demand has nowhere else to go.
What does a normal week in the yard look like?
Wider than most people picture. A vintage transit coach restoration can sit twenty feet from a current model electric delivery van, and both are ordinary work here. That range is the most honest description of what this shop does.
On the recreational side: a Class A diesel pusher in for cap and sidewall repair after a low clearance hit, a fifth wheel toy hauler having its ramp door and rear wall rebuilt, an Airstream having aluminum skin panels replaced, a travel trailer torn down to the subfloor after years of undetected water intrusion at a window frame.
On the commercial side: a box truck with a peeled aluminum roof rail after a loading dock incident, a reefer body with liner damage, a service body being installed on a new chassis, a shuttle bus in for full refinish, a fleet of delivery vans cycling through in twos so route coverage never drops.
On the specialty side: a Sprinter being converted to a camper, a mobile clinic having its interior fitted, a food truck having body damage repaired and its graphics reapplied. Those jobs make the shop unusual, because the body is the customer's business and downtime is measured in lost revenue rather than inconvenience.
Working across all three in the same week produces a specific kind of technician. Somebody who has repaired a laminated recreational sidewall, a composite commercial panel and an aluminum riveted skin has three mental models for the same class of problem, and reaches for the right one faster.
Why publish the rate card in full?
Because the alternative is quoting differently to every caller, and everybody in this trade knows it happens. Rates that appear on request, adjusted for how the conversation is going, are the norm. It is also the single largest reason owners distrust body shops.
Publishing every number, the four labor rates, the materials formulas, the parts markup tiers, the deposit structure and a ballpark range for every operation, removes the entire category of conversation. Two customers with the same job get the same rate. An adjuster reviewing an estimate can see how each figure was constructed. Nobody has to wonder whether the number went up because of who was asking.
It costs something. A published rate is a target for comparison shopping, and a $210 body and paint rate reads high next to a general shop that does not carry a booth long enough for your vehicle. The honest answer to that comparison is that hours multiplied by rate is only half the picture, and a lower rate applied to an incomplete scope is the more expensive repair. That argument is easier to make with the numbers on the table than off it.
The same reasoning drives publishing what the shop does not do. Internal engine and drivetrain work is not performed here, and saying so plainly costs a few phone calls and saves a great many wasted tows. The full card is on the prices page.
Why did the shop stay in shop only?
Because the capability is the building. Structural correction needs anchoring and measuring equipment fixed to a floor. Refinish needs a downdraft booth with filtration and controlled temperature, because a coach painted outdoors has contamination in the clear coat and no amount of polishing recovers it. Slide room work needs overhead lift capacity. Regulated material handling needs containment and documented disposal.
There was a real commercial temptation to go the other way. Owners ask, frequently, and a shop that travels to the customer sounds convenient. The problem is that everything worth doing on a large vehicle depends on equipment that cannot travel, and what actually gets performed away from a facility is the subset that does not need it. That subset skews heavily toward sealant and cosmetic work, which is precisely the category where a shortcut hides for two years and then costs somebody a subfloor.
Framed positively: bringing the vehicle here buys you the whole capability at once. Teardown, structural, body, refinish, systems and reassembly on one file, in one place, with the removed parts tagged and stored beside the vehicle so a carrier reinspection never requires a second disassembly.
What has stayed the same?
Three things, and they are the ones worth stating.
The first is that the vehicle stays in one place until the job is finished. No fragmenting a repair across facilities, no subletting the hard part, no coordination markup on somebody else's work. One shop, one file, one party accountable for the seam that has to still be dry in three winters.
The second is documentation as a default rather than a favor. Intake photographs, teardown photographs, moisture readings with locations and dates, part availability confirmations in writing, pre scan and post scan reports, and an hours breakdown against published rates. That package exists whether or not there is a claim, because it is what makes a dispute resolvable and a repair auditable.
The third is telling people what they do not want to hear early. That a rig is past the point where it should come back. That a total loss offer is worth accepting. That a part does not exist and the honest options are fabrication or a used unit with no history. That the calendar is longer than the labor hours suggest because approval time, not technician time, sets the schedule. Is this a franchise or part of a chain?
Neither. It is a single independent facility in Yorba Linda with one address and no satellite locations. Everything is performed at that building, which is why the structural equipment, the paint booth and the lift capacity are all in one place rather than divided across sites that each hold part of the capability.
Why do you work on both recreational vehicles and commercial trucks?
Because they are the same engineering problem wearing different badges: an oversized body, specialty construction and equipment nobody else has the space for. The techniques transfer directly. Panel work, structural correction, refinish and equipment installation do not care whether the vehicle carries passengers or freight.
What is the oldest vehicle you have worked on?
Restoration work on transit coaches from the late nineteen fifties has come through the shop alongside current model vans. Vintage units are their own discipline: parts do not exist, so fabrication and adaptation replace ordering, and the honest quote reflects hours of shaping metal rather than a part number and an install time.
Do you take on projects other shops have started and abandoned?
Regularly, and it is worth being blunt about how those go. Inherited work has to be assessed before it can be continued, because what was done underneath is unknown until it is opened. Expect an evaluation charge and expect the honest scope to be larger than the remaining work looked from outside.
