Because the client sits in it for an hour looking at it. A salon or spa vehicle is bought on the promise of a better experience than a busy shop, and a scuffed panel, a stained ceiling or a chair that has started to sag undermines the whole proposition before anybody picks up a pair of scissors.

So the triage here inverts. Wall and ceiling panel repair at $500 to $5,500, cabinetry work at $500 to $7,500, countertop repair and replacement at $500 to $7,500, flooring at $750 to $9,500 and furniture replacement at $750 to $8,500 are not cosmetic indulgences in this category. They are the thing being sold.

Lighting deserves its own line. LED lighting upgrades, interior and exterior, run $250 to $2,500, and lighting quality in a beauty vehicle decides whether colour work looks right to the client in the chair and in the photograph they take afterwards. It is the cheapest high impact change available on these builds and it is the one most often left as the builder installed it.

Water, movement and heat, in that order.

Water. Shampoo bowls, basins and the plumbing serving them run all day, and the failure is almost never dramatic. It is a slow weep at a fitting that soaks the floor structure under the cabinetry for a year. Fresh water plumbing service runs $285 to $4,500, waste tank work $750 to $8,500 and faucet and fixture replacement $200 to $800. Check under the bowl properly, not with a glance.

Movement. Chairs, trolleys and cabinetry all take load and vibration on every journey, and the fixings into the floor and walls are the thing that gives up. A chair that rocks slightly is a floor mounting that has started to work loose, and mounting failures accelerate.

Heat. Dryers, styling equipment and a small enclosed volume put more heat and humidity into the space than the build usually assumes. Ventilation system repair and upgrade runs $300 to $3,500 and air conditioning replacement with hard start or soft start install runs $750 to $4,500. Clients notice temperature faster than anything else.

Book the outage rather than suffering it. Beauty businesses run on repeat clients on a rhythm, and a cancellation costs the appointment plus a portion of the relationship. Two closed days chosen in advance are far cheaper than one emergency day that lands on a Saturday.

Bundle aggressively. If the ceiling panel needs attention and the chair rocks and the water heater is slow, that is one visit, and doing all three at once shares the access work. Owners in this category are especially prone to fixing the visible item and leaving the plumbing that caused it.

Send photographs before you drive over. Interior work is unusually easy to scope from images, and knowing the panel size, the finish and the fixing method in advance means the material is here when the vehicle is.

Four things, and they show up immediately in how long the vehicle stays presentable.

• Sealed wet zones. The area under and around any basin built as a tray that drains rather than as a floor that hopes. Almost all long term damage in this category starts here.
• Load rated mounting. Chairs and cabinetry bolted into structure with backing plates, not screwed into thin panel. This is the difference between a build that lasts five years and one that rattles after eighteen months.
• Layered lighting. Task lighting at the chair separate from ambient lighting, with colour temperature chosen for skin and hair rather than for the light fitting that was available.
• Real ventilation. Mechanical extraction sized for the heat and product vapour actually generated, not a single roof vent.
