Swapping to LED Changes More Than the Brightness

Lighting work covers fixture repair, LED conversion, dimming, switching and new circuits inside and outside a coach. It runs $250 to $2,500 across 1 to 10 hours. Converting to LED cuts current draw substantially, which is usually the real reason to do it, but it also exposes dimmers and switches that were sized for incandescent loads.

What does an LED conversion actually save?

Current, and it is not marginal. An incandescent fixture in a coach commonly draws well over an amp, and an equivalent LED draws a small fraction of that. On a coach with a dozen or more interior fixtures, running the lights in the evening can be one of the larger loads on the house bank.

The practical result is boondocking time. An owner who is short on battery capacity often does not need more battery, they need less draw, and lighting is the cheapest place to find it. That is why lighting conversion routinely comes up alongside battery and charging system work.

Heat is the secondary benefit and it matters more in a coach than a house. Incandescent fixtures put real heat into a small, insulated space and into the panel or cabinet they are mounted in. Scorched trim around a reading light is common on older coaches.

What LED does not fix is a bad circuit. If lights are dimming, flickering or dying in groups, that is a wiring, connection or voltage problem, and swapping bulbs into it changes nothing.

Why do LEDs flicker on a dimmer that used to work?

Because the dimmer was designed for a different kind of load. An incandescent lamp is a resistive load and dims by simply getting less power. An LED module has driver electronics between the supply and the diode, and most 12 volt coach dimmers work by chopping the supply, which those drivers do not always tolerate.

The symptoms are recognisable: flicker at low settings, a range where nothing changes, lights that will not go fully off, or a buzz from the dimmer or the fixture. Occasionally a single incompatible fixture makes the whole circuit misbehave.

The fixes are, in order of cost: choose LED modules rated as dimmable on the type of dimmer fitted, replace the dimmer with one designed for LED loads, or replace fixture and control together as a matched pair. The last is the most reliable and it is why full fixture replacement often works out better than lamp swapping.

Colour temperature is worth deciding at the same time. Coach interiors are small and reflective, and a cool white that looks fine in a garage feels clinical inside a coach. Mixing temperatures between fixtures in one space is the most common regret after a partial conversion.

What goes wrong with the fixtures and circuits themselves?

Vibration and corrosion, mostly.

  • Contact failure. Bayonet and wedge sockets corrode and lose spring tension, so a lamp that tests fine flickers in service. Cleaning and re tensioning fixes some, replacement fixes the rest.
  • Switch wear. Rocker switches in coach fixtures are the most handled component in the vehicle and they wear out on a predictable schedule.
  • Wire chafe. Wiring passing through a panel or a stud without a grommet eventually wears through its insulation. That fault produces intermittent behaviour and it is the reason a good lighting diagnosis includes tracing rather than swapping.
  • Ground faults. Coach 12 volt grounds are often shared and daisy chained, so one bad ground makes several unrelated fixtures behave strangely.
  • Water ingress on exterior lights. Awning lights, porch lights and marker lights all have gaskets that age, and a wet fixture corrodes internally and then leaks into the wall.

What is worth adding while the panels are open?

If a coach is already apart for interior work, lighting is the cheapest thing to improve, because the labour is already being spent on access.

Useful additions include under cabinet task lighting in the galley, which is the single change owners report liking most; dimmable indirect lighting in the main living area instead of a single bright ceiling fixture; a switched night light circuit at the entry and the bathroom; and exterior lighting at the awning and the entry step.

Reading lights with individual switching in the bedroom, and puck lighting inside deep cabinets and wardrobes, both solve real annoyances for very little money when the panel is already off.

Anything added has to be counted against circuit capacity, which is a simple sum but one that gets skipped. The convenience of a well lit galley is not worth a nuisance fuse on a circuit that was already near its limit.

Questions we get asked

Can I just put LED bulbs in my existing fixtures?

Often yes, and it is the cheapest route. Watch for three things: dimmable rating where a dimmer is fitted, physical fit inside the housing since LED modules are frequently deeper, and colour temperature consistency so half the coach does not read warm and the other half cold.

Why do my lights dim when the water pump runs?

That is voltage sag under load, and it points at the battery, the connections or the cable sizing rather than at the lights. A healthy bank with sound connections holds voltage when a pump starts. It is worth investigating, because the same weakness affects everything else on the system.

How much battery time does an LED conversion actually add?

It depends on how much you use lighting, but the draw reduction per fixture is large. On a coach where evening lighting was a significant share of overnight consumption, conversion frequently makes a bigger practical difference than adding capacity, and it costs far less.

My exterior light leaks. Is that a lighting job or a body job?

Both, and the body side matters more. The fixture gets replaced or resealed, and the wall behind it gets checked for water that has already entered, because an exterior light is a penetration through the sidewall and a leaking one wets the structure around it.
