Flatbed Truck Repair: Decks, Headboards and Tie Down Hardware

Deck Materials Behave Nothing Alike

Before anything gets quoted on a flatbed, the deck material has to be identified, because steel, aluminum and hardwood fail in ways that share almost nothing.

Steel plate and steel plank decks

Steel decks dish under point loads and rust from the underside where nobody looks. The failure sequence is dish, then crack at the support crossmember, then perforation. Repair is cut, replace the section, and weld back to the crossmembers with the correct sequence so the deck does not pull itself into a banana while cooling.

Extruded aluminum plank decks

Aluminum planks interlock and are individually replaceable, which sounds simple and is not. Getting one plank out of the middle of a locked deck means either sliding the whole set or cutting the damaged plank out and accepting a joint. The right answer depends on how many planks are damaged and where they sit.

Hardwood and apitong decks

Wood rots at the fastener and at the ends where water sits against a crossmember. Replacing a plank is quick. Replacing the bolts that pass through it into a corroded crossmember is the part that takes the hours.

The Headboard Takes the Load Nobody Planned For

A headboard or bulkhead exists for a load that shifts forward under braking, and most of them get their real workout once in their life, usually during an event the driver did not enjoy. What we see afterward is bending at the uprights just above the deck line, and mounting hardware pulled through the deck rather than sheared.

That distinction matters. A pulled fastener means the load path went through the deck, so the deck around each mount has to be examined even if the headboard is the only visible casualty. Straightening a headboard and rebolting it to a deck with elongated holes puts the next event straight back through the same weakened path.

Where a headboard is beyond straightening, it gets fabricated. Uprights, cross members and a mesh or plate face are built to the original footprint, and the mounts are reinforced with backing plate under the deck so the next load spreads across a wider area. That work runs through the welding and metal fabrication bench.

Stake Pockets, Rub Rails and Tie Down Hardware

Stake pockets and rub rails are the two components most likely to be quietly bent on a flatbed that its operator considers to be in good shape. Pockets get spread by stakes that were struck while loaded. Rub rails get flattened against docks and against other trucks. Both are structural in the sense that strap tension is anchored to them.

  • Spread or torn stake pocket: cut out, replace the pocket, and weld back with full penetration into the rail, not a stitch on the visible face.
  • Crushed rub rail section: replace the section rather than hammering it out. A hammered rail has already yielded and will collapse again at a lower load.
  • Elongated tie down ring: replace, do not weld closed. A ring that has stretched has been past yield and the metal has changed.
  • Missing winch track section: replaced as a run with the mounting pattern matched to the original, so straps and winches interchange across the fleet.

E track, D ring and tie down installation is posted at $250 to $2,500 for 1 to 10 hours. On a flatbed that is usually recessed D rings along the rail or a run of E track down the deck centre, and the pricing depends far more on how many anchors are going in and what has to be reinforced underneath than on the hardware itself.

Deck to Frame Mounting and the Corrosion Line

Here is the thing that separates a flatbed that lasts from one that does not. The deck is fastened to the frame at a repeating line of bolts or welds, and that line is a moisture trap. Water wicks under the deck, sits against the crossmember at the fastener, and works in the dark for years.

By the time you see rust bleeding around a bolt head from above, the crossmember flange below is usually further gone than the deck itself. The correct repair is to pull the fasteners, get eyes and a pick on the crossmember, cut out what has gone thin, weld in new material, and only then refasten. Reusing a corroded fastener into a thinned flange is how a deck ends up moving under load.

After repair, the underside gets treated. Rust treatment and anti corrosion coating is posted at $400 to $3,500 for 2 to 14 hours, and it is the cheapest hour a flatbed owner will ever spend. Bedliner and box liner spray in, at $500 to $1,800 for 3 to 7 hours, adds a wear surface on top where cargo drags across the deck.

To be explicit about scope: the deck, the crossmembers we weld to, the hardware and the protective coating are all in scope here. Powertrain components, engine service and roadworthiness sign off are not things this shop performs.

Goosenecks, Pintles and Sending It Back Out

Flatbeds tow. Tow hitch, pintle and gooseneck installation is posted at $500 to $3,500 for 2 to 14 hours, and the variable is the mounting, not the hardware. A pintle onto an existing reinforced rear crossmember is a straightforward job. A gooseneck ball into a deck that has never carried one means opening the deck, building a mount that ties into the frame rails, and closing the deck back up with a properly sealed access cover.

Before release, a pre trip cosmetic and structural body inspection at $250 to $600 for 1 to 3 hours documents deck condition, fastener line, rails, pockets and marking, which gives the fleet a written baseline for the next incident. If your unit is coming from a Tustin yard, the run is the 55 to the 91, and shop hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm with Saturday 9:30am to 3:00pm. Questions we get asked

Can you replace one damaged plank in an aluminum deck?

Sometimes, and sometimes the honest answer is a joint. Extruded planks interlock, so removing one from the middle means sliding the set or cutting the plank out and accepting a seam. We look at how many planks are affected and where they sit before recommending which approach costs you less overall.

There is rust bleeding around the deck bolts. How bad is it?

Usually worse than it looks from above. The crossmember flange under the fastener is typically further gone than the deck. We pull fasteners, inspect the flange, cut out thinned material and weld in new before refastening, then treat the underside at $400 to $3,500 for 2 to 14 hours.

Do you install E track and D rings on flatbed decks?

Yes, posted at $250 to $2,500 for 1 to 10 hours. The cost driver is the anchor count and what has to be reinforced beneath the deck, not the hardware price. Anchors that are not backed properly pull through the deck under strap tension, so backing goes in as part of the install.
