What kind of suspension is under your trailer?
Two designs cover nearly all towables, and they age completely differently.
- Leaf spring with equaliser
- Multiple leaf packs connected by shackles and an equaliser between the axles on tandem units. Serviceable: bushings, shackle bolts, springs and the equaliser can all be replaced individually. The wear points are the bushings and the bolts, and a worn set lets the axles move out of parallel, which shows up as diagonal tyre wear.
- Torsion axle
- Rubber cords inside a square tube provide the springing, with no equaliser and no external moving parts. Quieter and lower maintenance, but the rubber compresses permanently with age. When it does, the axle is replaced rather than rebuilt, and both sides should be addressed together so the trailer sits level.

What are the warning signs you can see from outside?
Trailers do not tell you anything from the driver's seat, so the inspection is visual and it happens on the ground.
- Uneven tyre wear across an axle pair. Feathering or one sided wear points at axle alignment, worn bushings or a bent axle.
- A trailer that sits nose high or nose low. Usually sagged springs or compressed torsion cords, and it changes how weight transfers to the tow vehicle.
- Grease staining behind a wheel. A failed inner seal, which means the bearing is running without full lubrication.
- Rust streaks below a frame weld. Rust from inside a tube is a structural finding, not a cosmetic one.
- Slack or a clunk at the coupler. Worn coupler mechanism or an elongated bolt hole in the A frame.
Wheel bearing repack and hub service runs $250 to $1,200 and is the least expensive insurance on the list against a bearing failure that ends a trip and often takes the axle with it.
How do electric trailer brakes actually fail?
Gradually, and usually electrically rather than mechanically. An electric drum brake uses a magnet that is pulled against the rotating drum face by current from the tow vehicle's controller. The magnet arm then applies the shoes. Three failure points follow from that design.
First, the magnet face wears and stops making full contact, so braking effort falls off on that wheel while the others compensate. Second, the wiring to each brake assembly runs along the axle and takes road spray, so corrosion at a splice reduces current and therefore braking. Third, drums score and shoes glaze, particularly on a trailer that sits for long periods between uses.
The symptom owners notice is a trailer that pushes at a stop even with the controller turned up, or one wheel running noticeably hotter than the others. Electric, surge and hydraulic brake service runs $300 to $5,500 and 1 to 22 labor hours. Seven way and four way connector repair, which is where a surprising share of brake complaints actually originate, runs $200 to $800.
What structural work do utility and cargo trailers need?
Different work from a travel trailer, because they carry load rather than people. The recurring jobs:
- Floor repair and replacement in wood, aluminium or steel deck, $500 to $9,500. Decking fails from the underside up, so a floor that looks fine on top may be gone underneath.
- Wall and roof skin replacement, $1,000 to $15,000, usually after a low clearance strike or corner damage from loading.
- E track, D ring and tie down installation, $250 to $2,500, and correct backing behind each anchor matters more than the anchor itself.
- Rust treatment and anti corrosion coating, $400 to $3,500, worth doing before rust reaches a weld rather than after.
- Tongue, coupler and safety chain repair, $250 to $1,500, and any of these three is a safety item rather than a convenience item.

When should a trailer come in even with nothing obviously wrong?
Annually if it tows at all, and before any long trip after a period of storage. Trailer annual maintenance service runs $300 to $1,500 and 2 to 6 labor hours, which covers bearings, brakes, suspension, the coupler, the connector and a roof and sealant check on enclosed units.
The argument for doing it on a schedule is that trailer failures are almost never gradual from the driver's perspective. A bearing that has been marginal for two thousand miles gives no warning through the tow vehicle, then seizes. The inspection is the only place that gets caught.
A trailer pre purchase inspection runs $250 to $800 and is worth its cost on any used purchase, particularly on units where the seller cannot say when the bearings were last serviced. Book either through the quote request form.

Questions we get asked
Can you replace one axle or do both have to be done?
One can be replaced, but on a tandem with torsion axles both should be evaluated together. Torsion cords compress with age and load, so a new axle paired with a decade old one leaves the trailer sitting unevenly and puts more weight through one axle than the design intends. On leaf spring tandems, replacing springs in pairs per side achieves the same balance.
Why does my trailer sway even though it is loaded correctly?
Loading is only one input. Worn suspension bushings, mismatched tyre pressures, a bent axle and inadequate tongue weight all produce sway that no amount of careful packing corrects. A weight distribution and sway control setup helps, but it compensates rather than fixes, so the running gear inspection should come first.
Do you work on utility and cargo trailers or only RV towables?
Both. Enclosed cargo trailers, utility trailers, toy haulers and travel trailers all come through the same bays, and the running gear work is largely identical across them. Cargo and utility units additionally need deck, skin, ramp door and tie down work that RV towables do not.
