Fifth Wheel Repair Shop Serving Tustin: The Front Half Is the Problem

On a fifth wheel the front half takes the abuse: the front cap flexes and cracks, the upper deck leaks at its transitions, the pin box carries every road input, and the landing gear is the most used mechanism on the trailer. Fiberglass cap repair runs $750 to $12,000 at OCRV Center near Tustin.

Ballpark range $750 to $12,000 at 4 to 60 hours of labor. See the posted rate card.

Why does the front cap crack on almost every fifth wheel?

Because it is a large fiberglass moulding cantilevered over the hitch, and it flexes every time the trailer articulates. The gooseneck section pivots relative to the tow vehicle constantly, and the cap is the outer skin over the structure taking that motion.

Cracks appear in three predictable places: the radius corners where the cap curves from the front face to the sides, around the front window frame, and along the joint where the cap meets the upper deck. All three are stress concentrations, and all three are also water entry paths once open.

The repair is not a filler job. The crack is ground back to sound laminate, rebuilt with mat and resin, faired and refinished, with the surrounding area blended so the pattern does not telegraph through the new finish. Fiberglass cap repair runs $750 to $12,000 and 4 to 60 labor hours; a full cap replacement runs $4,500 to $25,000 and is the answer when the moulding itself has failed rather than cracked. Method detail is on the fiberglass repair page.

What goes wrong with the pin box and the upper deck?

The upper deck is a floor over a void, sitting above the tow vehicle bed, and its transitions leak. Water that enters at the front cap joint or at a slide above the deck runs into that structure and sits, because there is nowhere for it to drain. The result is a soft bedroom floor and, eventually, framing that no longer carries load where the pin box attaches.

Pin boxes themselves come in solid and air ride forms. Air ride units cushion road input and reduce the shock loading that cracks caps, but the air bag and its bushings are wear items. A pin box that has been overloaded or has taken a jackknife impact needs the mounting structure inspected, not just the box replaced.

Hitch, coupler, gooseneck and fifth wheel service runs $400 to $5,500 and 2 to 22 labor hours. Where the deck framing itself is wet, that becomes water damage restoration and subfloor replacement at $750 to $15,000, and the two jobs should be scoped together rather than in sequence.

How many slides is too many, and what do they cost to keep?

The count is not the problem. Mixed mechanisms and unmaintained seals are. A four slide fifth wheel commonly runs a Schwintek in wall system on the bedroom wardrobe, a through frame rack and pinion on the living room, and something else again on the kitchen, all in one vehicle.

Practical consequences. Each mechanism needs its own diagnosis, so a blanket statement that the slides need work is not a scope. Each room needs its own seal set, and a wiper seal that has hardened on one room does not tell you anything about the next. And each slide is a hole in the sidewall, which means each one is a leak path that needs sealant maintained around the entire opening.

Slide mechanism service runs $500 to $8,500, seal replacement $400 to $3,000, topper replacement $450 to $1,800 and slide room rebuild $1,500 to $7,500. The mechanism identification guide is on RV slide out repair.

What does landing gear failure actually look like?

One leg moving while the other does not, or a grinding noise partway through travel. Electric landing gear uses a motor driving a gearbox and cross shaft, so a failure at the shaft, the coupler or one gearbox leaves the trailer lifting at an angle. Continuing to run it in that state bends the legs and damages the front frame.

The usual causes are simple: low battery voltage under load, a corroded ground, a worn gearbox, or a leg that has been driven past its stop. Leveling jack service covering manual, electric and hydraulic units runs $300 to $4,500 and 1 to 18 labor hours.

The habit that prevents most of it is running the gear through full travel occasionally rather than only to the height you use, and keeping the battery healthy, since landing gear and slides share the same weak point in a tired battery bank. Fifth wheel types are listed under campers and trailers, and running gear is covered on trailer repair.

How this job runs

  1. Front cap and upper deck survey

The cap is checked at the radius corners, around the front window and along the deck transition, because these are the flex points that crack first. Any crack is opened to sound laminate before it is measured for repair.

  2. Pin, deck and frame check

The pin box mounting, the upper deck framing and the frame at the transition from upper deck to main floor are inspected together. These carry the load path, and a problem in one shows up as a symptom in another.

  3. Slide inventory

Each slide is identified by mechanism, since a single fifth wheel commonly runs different systems on different rooms, then cycled under observation for lead, lag, bind and seal contact around the full perimeter.

  4. Running gear and landing gear

Axles, springs, bearings and brakes are checked, then the landing gear legs, gearbox and motor are cycled through full travel. Landing gear is the most frequently operated mechanism on the trailer and the least frequently serviced.

Questions we get asked

My fifth wheel front cap has a crack. Can I just seal it?

Sealing keeps water out temporarily, which has value if you are heading into wet weather before a repair. It is not a repair. The crack is a symptom of flex, and sealant over it will reopen because the movement continues. Treat it as a stopgap and get the laminate rebuilt before the surrounding area starts to spread.

Is a toy hauler repaired differently from a standard fifth wheel?

Mostly the same, with two additions. The ramp door and its hinge, seal and cable system is a wear item that takes both weather and load. And the garage floor takes tie down loads and fuel spills, so the flooring and the anchor backing need inspecting on any toy hauler with real use behind it.

Why is my bedroom floor soft when the roof looks fine?

Because upper deck water rarely comes from the roof. The likelier sources are the front cap joint, the front window frame, a slide above the deck, or the seam where the cap meets the sidewall. Water enters high, runs into the deck structure and sits there with no path out, so the roof can be perfect and the floor still fails.

Can you take a fifth wheel with the truck still attached?

Bring the truck for drop off and pickup. Once here, the trailer is set on its own landing gear and stands so the underside, the pin area and the running gear are accessible. Confirm before arrival if the landing gear is not working, since that changes how the trailer is received.

How large a fifth wheel can you take?

Full length luxury and destination units, toy haulers and multi slide fifth wheels all fit. The facility is 35,000 square feet with the door height and yard space to receive full size towables without disassembly, which is the constraint that turns most trailers away at smaller shops.
