Because a grooming van generates far more of it than the build usually accounts for. Bathing, drying and the animals themselves put water and vapour into a small sealed volume, and the vapour goes wherever it can: into the floor at the seams, into the wall cavity behind the tub, into the roof structure around a vent, and into every electrical connection that was not sealed.

The failure chain is predictable. Floor seams let water into the substrate. The substrate softens and the tub mounting loosens. The loose tub flexes and opens the seams further. Meanwhile the humidity corrodes connectors, which produces electrical faults that appear to be unrelated. By the time an owner calls, there are four problems and one cause.

Flooring replacement runs $750 to $9,500, floor repair and replacement $500 to $9,500 and water damage restoration with subfloor replacement $750 to $15,000. Ventilation system repair and upgrade runs $300 to $3,500, and on this vehicle type ventilation is not a comfort item, it is the thing that prevents the rest of the list.

Three things, and they are the calls we take most often from this group.

Water systems. Fresh and waste tanks, pumps, the water heater and the plumbing to the tub run constantly and at higher duty than any recreational installation. Fresh water plumbing service runs $285 to $4,500, water heater service $350 to $4,500, waste tank repair and replacement $750 to $8,500 and macerator and pump replacement $400 to $1,800.

Power. Dryers draw hard and continuously, which is a different load profile from an RV. Generator service and repair runs $400 to $8,500 and is the most common source of a lost appointment day in this category. House batteries and inverters get cycled far deeper than the equipment was specified for, and battery replacement runs $500 to $5,500.

Hair. It gets into drains, pump inlets, vent fans, the generator air intake and every electrical enclosure that is not sealed. A large share of what presents as a pump or generator fault is a hair problem wearing a costume.

By repairing in the gaps and by bundling. A grooming route is booked days or weeks ahead with clients who will go elsewhere if cancelled twice, so the cost of an unplanned outage is not one day of revenue, it is a proportion of the client list.

Practical version: pick a slow week, book it deliberately, and bring the whole list. The water system, the ventilation, the floor seams, the generator service and the body damage you have been ignoring all get handled in one outage. Owners who fix one thing at a time in this category spend more time closed than owners who plan a single week off.

Send photographs and a description before you drive over. If a part has to be ordered, ordering it before the van arrives is the difference between three days and eleven.

Water management, in every sense. A build that lasts has a floor that is sealed and coved so water cannot reach a seam, a properly sized and vented extraction path so humidity leaves rather than condensing, drains and traps that can be accessed and cleared without dismantling anything, and electrical enclosures that are actually sealed rather than merely covered.

It also has serviceable access. The pump, the water heater, the tank fittings and the generator should all be reachable without removing the tub, because all four are wear items and all four will need attention. Builds that bury them cost their owner a day of labor every time.
