How does the battery pack change body repair?
Completely, and in three ways. First, the pack is structural. On a skateboard platform the battery case is part of the load path, tying the front and rear structures together and stiffening the floor. Damage to the case is a structural finding, not an electrical one.
Second, it constrains process. Welding near the pack, applying heat, drilling into the floor or pulling on a bench with clamps in the wrong place are all things that either cannot be done or have to be done to a specific manufacturer procedure. Anchoring points for a pull are dictated by the platform, not by convenience.
Third, it changes the sequence. High voltage isolation happens before anything else, following the manufacturer's disable procedure, and it is documented. Only then does teardown begin. What are the bodies actually made of?
Rarely just steel, which is the second thing that surprises shops used to conventional vans. Purpose built electric delivery vehicles use aluminium extrusions, composite panels, structural adhesives and moulded thermoplastic body sections in combinations that vary by manufacturer.
That matters because the joining method dictates the repair method before anyone picks up a tool. Aluminium intensive structures are riveted and bonded rather than MIG welded. Composite panels are bonded and cannot be heat straightened. A thermoplastic body panel may be a bolt on service item that is replaced rather than repaired.

Why does downtime dominate a fleet conversation?
Because a delivery van earns money on a route and an off road van does not. For a fleet operator the repair cost is often the smaller number and the days out of service is the larger one, and a shop that does not understand that is not much use to a fleet.
- Parts availability, which on newer electric platforms is the most common cause of a long hold.
- Whether the damage can be repaired or requires a bonded panel from the manufacturer.

What is in scope on an electric van?
Body, paint, structural, interior, upfit equipment, lighting, shelving, cargo floors, bulkheads and glass. ADAS scan and recalibration is posted at $275 to $1,800 across 1 to 7 hours and is required after almost any front or windshield related repair on these vehicles, because the camera and radar positions define where the van thinks obstacles are.

My electric van took a side impact near the rocker. Is the battery affected?
It has to be assessed rather than assumed. The rocker area on a skateboard platform is directly alongside the pack and is designed as a protective structure, so damage there is inspected against the manufacturer's criteria before any repair is planned. The vehicle is isolated first as a matter of process.
Can you weld on an electric delivery van?
Where the structure and the manufacturer procedure allow it, and not simply because it would be convenient. Many of these bodies use aluminium and bonded composite construction where welding is not the correct joining method at all. The panel and joint type determine the method before the estimate is written.
How many vans can you take at once from a fleet?
The Yorba Linda facility is 35,000 square feet and runs at 50 to 150 repairs a month with 20 collisions and 50 to 100 paint jobs, so scheduling several vans in sequence is routine. Fleets normally stage vehicles so a set number are in work at any time rather than sending them all together.
Do you replace livery and graphics after a repair?

Is ADAS recalibration really necessary after a bumper repair?
On these vans, yes. The forward radar sits at or behind the bumper and the camera is on the windshield, so removing and refitting either moves the sensor relative to the vehicle centreline. A sensor a fraction of a degree out reports obstacles in the wrong place. The scan runs before teardown as well as after reassembly.
