Mobile Medical Clinic Body and Interior Repair

Most vehicles get repaired until they look right. A clinic vehicle gets repaired until it is provably clean. Every surface a patient or a clinician can touch has to be non porous, without an open seam, and able to take repeated wipe down with hospital grade disinfectant without crazing, lifting or absorbing anything.

That single requirement drives most of the decisions on the job. It rules out an unsealed repair joint in a wall panel. It rules out a trim strip screwed over a seam to hide it. It rules out carpet, exposed plywood edges and any fastener head that is not filled and finished. When we open a wall to reach collision damage from inside, we plan the close up around that standard before we cut, because a finish that cannot be brought back to a continuous wipeable surface has to be replaced wholesale rather than patched.

The second driver is the equipment. A clinic build is a chain of dependencies: the exam surface needs power, the power needs a transfer switch, the switch needs a shore inlet and a generator, and the whole chain has to be verified end to end after the wall it runs through has been rebuilt.

Exam privacy comes from a partition, usually a framed panel wall or a rigid folding assembly anchored into the vehicle side ribs and the floor. It is a structural element as well as a privacy one, because in most builds it braces the side wall. Remove it to reach a damaged panel and the wall loses stiffness, so it goes back into the same anchor points with the same fasteners.

The flooring is where clinic builds differ most from any other vehicle in this category. It is normally a continuous sheet vinyl with the sheet turned up the wall to form a coved base, heat welded at every joint, so there is no crack at the wall to floor junction for fluid to enter. That detail is the first casualty of a repair. Once the wall panel comes off, the coved edge is cut and the flooring has to be re laid and re welded, not trimmed and caulked.

The hand wash station sits at the same junction and carries the same requirement. Supply and drain lines are re run inside the cavity, the basin is re bedded, and the splash surround is finished continuous with the wall rather than butted to it.

A clinic vehicle usually runs three power sources: shore power at the parking site, an on board generator, and an inverter and battery bank that holds the load while the other two hand over. The transfer switch is what arbitrates between them, and it is the component most often blamed for faults that actually sit upstream in the inlet or downstream in the panel.

After collision work, the whole chain gets proven rather than spot checked. Transfer switch and shore power diagnostics run $285 to $1,500 across 1 to 6 hours; inverter and charger replacement runs $750 to $4,500 across 3 to 14 hours. Diagnostic time is $285 an hour, applied as a credit against an authorized repair.

Imaging equipment is the other thing that separates these builds. An ultrasound cart is a non issue. A fixed imaging unit or a heavy dental or optometry chair is not: it sits on a reinforced floor section with a spreader plate, often a steel sub frame tied into the chassis rails rather than the van floor. If that area was disturbed, the reinforcement is inspected and re certified for load before the equipment goes back down. It is also the reason we corner weigh the vehicle after a rebuild rather than assuming the load returned where it started.

Patient entry is either a ramp or a powered lift, and either way it lives in an aperture cut into a side or rear wall. That aperture has the same weakness as any large opening in a stressed skin: the corners crack first, the door stops sitting square second. On intake we check the diagonal of the opening before we look at the lift, because a lift that binds is usually reporting a body problem.

An accessible entry has clearance and threshold requirements that survive the repair or the vehicle is out of service. Threshold height, ramp slope, clear opening width and the platform landing all get measured back to the original build spec, not to whatever the panel work happened to leave. Step replacement runs $400 to $2,000 across 2 to 8 hours, and sliding door repair covering track, roller, latch and power runs $400 to $3,500.

Privacy glazing is the small item that gets forgotten. Clinic windows are usually obscured or fitted with a fixed blind assembly, and the blind carrier is fastened into the window frame. If the frame is replaced, the carrier mounting goes back with it. Window install for side, rear and sliding openings runs $400 to $3,500 across 2 to 14 hours.
