The camper comes off the truck before anything else happens
This is not a preference, it is a requirement. A slide-in sitting in a truck bed hides the four things an estimator most needs to see: the underside of the floor, the lower sidewall behind the bed rail, the jack bracket backing structure, and the tie down anchor points. Every one of them is a load bearing area and every one of them is covered while the camper is loaded.
Working a camper in the bed also produces bad repairs. Panel work needs support behind the skin. Jack bracket repair needs access to the interior side of the sidewall. Floor and subfloor work needs the underside open. None of that is available with the unit sitting on a truck.
The shop has the height and the floor space to jack a camper off, set it on stands, and release the truck. Owners routinely drive the truck home and come back for it, which is usually the right call because these repairs run in labor hours rather than in days.
Once it is on stands, the estimate gets accurate. Hidden damage on truck campers is the norm, not the exception, and finding it before authorization is what keeps a supplement from becoming a surprise.
Corner jacks and the sidewall they tear out of
Four electric or manual jacks lift the camper. Each mounts to a bracket, and each bracket bolts through the lower sidewall into a backing plate or a reinforced framing member inside the wall. When the camper is up on its jacks, the entire mass, plus whatever the owner has loaded, hangs off those four brackets in a way the wall was never asked to handle while driving.
The failure is progressive and it looks minor at first. Bolt holes elongate slightly. The bracket begins to rock a few thousandths under load. That movement crushes the laminate around the fastener, water finds the crushed area, the substrate softens, and now the bracket is bolted to wet luan. The next lift is when it tears out, usually with the camper part way up.
The correct repair is not a longer bolt and a bigger washer. The wall is opened, the crushed and wet substrate is cut back to sound material, a new backing structure is fitted and bonded, then the skin and interior panel are closed up and refinished. Doing anything less puts the failure back in the same place with less material to work with.
Owners can prevent most of this by lifting on level ground and by never using the jacks to level the camper on a slope. A jack loaded off axis puts a bending moment into a bracket designed for compression.
The cabover nose, the wing walls and where the cracks start
The cabover overhangs the truck cab with no support under it. It carries a mattress, bedding, often storage, and it cantilevers off the front wall of the camper box. Every dip in the road puts a bending cycle into the joint where the overhang meets the box, and that joint is where the stress crack appears: a hairline in the fiberglass or a lifted seam at the base of the nose, running horizontally.
The wing walls, the side panels that flare down from the cabover toward the truck bed rails, take the same cycling from a different direction, plus wind load. Cracks there tend to start at a corner radius or at a window opening in the wing.
The important point is that neither crack is cosmetic. Both are telling you the structure under the skin is flexing more than it should, usually because a bonded joint has released or a framing member has fractured. Sealing the crack traps water behind the repair and hides the movement that caused it.

Bed rail contact, tie down loading and why weight matters
A slide-in rides on the bed floor, but it also touches the bed rails along the wing walls. That contact is intended to be soft, through a mat or a rail pad. When the pad compresses or migrates, aluminum or fiberglass rides directly on painted steel, and highway vibration turns the contact line into abrasion. On a fiberglass camper it wears through gel coat into laminate. On the truck side it wears through paint into bare steel, which then rusts under the camper where nobody looks.
Tie downs are the other half. Four turnbuckles clamp the camper down, front and rear, into frame mounted anchors or bed mounted brackets. Overtightened, they pull the camper down onto the bed rails hard enough to crack a wing wall. Undertightened, the camper walks fore and aft, which hammers the anchor points and rounds out the mounting holes. Spring loaded turnbuckles exist for exactly this reason.
Weight distribution matters more on this subtype than on any other camper. The centre of gravity sits high and, on many units, behind the rear axle once a generator, water and gear are loaded. That geometry amplifies every input into the cabover joint and the jack brackets. An owner who adds a rear mounted carrier is loading the two weakest points on the vehicle at once.

Do I have to leave my truck when the camper is repaired?
No. The camper comes off onto stands, and you take the truck home. Access to the floor underside, the lower sidewalls and the jack brackets is the entire reason we pull it, and none of that work can be done properly with the unit in the bed.
A jack bracket pulled out of my sidewall. Can it just be re-bolted?
Not honestly. When a bracket tears out, the substrate around the fasteners has already been crushed and is usually wet. We open the wall, cut back to sound material, bond in new backing structure, then close and refinish. A larger bolt in soft laminate fails again on the next lift.
There is a hairline crack under my cabover. Is it structural?
Treat it as structural until proven otherwise. A horizontal crack at the base of the nose means the cantilevered overhang is flexing at its joint with the box, usually because a bond has released or a framing member has fractured. Sealing it hides the movement.
What causes the rub marks along my wing walls?
Direct contact with the truck bed rails after the rail pad compressed or shifted. Highway vibration abrades gel coat on the camper and paint on the truck. Both sides need attention, because bare steel under a loaded camper corrodes where nobody inspects it.
How tight should truck camper tie downs be?
Snug enough that the camper cannot walk, loose enough that it is not being clamped onto the bed rails. Spring loaded turnbuckles handle that balance better than rigid ones. Overtightening cracks wing walls, undertightening rounds out the anchor points.
