Toy Hauler Fifth Wheel Garage and Ramp Door Repair
A toy hauler fifth wheel gives up its rear wall to a ramp door and turns the back third into a garage that carries motorcycles or a side by side. OCRV Center repairs the ramp, the garage structure and the fuel system in shop. Camper body work is posted at $750 to $50,000 across 5 to 250 hours.
Ballpark range $750 to $50,000 at 5 to 250 hours of labor. See the posted rate card.
Why does a ramp door weaken the rear of the trailer?
On a conventional fifth wheel the rear wall is a closed structure that ties the two sidewalls together and resists the trailer twisting. On a toy hauler most of that wall is a hole with a door in it. The builder compensates with a heavier frame around the opening and additional tie in at the roof and floor, and on a well built trailer that works.
What it cannot fully compensate for is load. A garage carrying a side by side puts several hundred pounds of concentrated, moving mass behind the axles, which is the worst place on a trailer to put anything. The rear of the trailer twists more, the door opening flexes with it, and the flex shows up at the corners of the opening.
The symptoms are consistent: cracks radiating from the upper corners of the ramp opening, a door that no longer seals along the top, and a latch that has to be forced. Those get treated as structural findings. Frame and structural repair is posted at $750 to $20,000 across 5 to 80 hours.
What fails on the ramp door itself?
The ramp is a large heavy panel, hinged at the bottom, held closed at the top by cam latches and supported when open by cables. Every one of those elements is a wear item and they fail in a predictable order.
- Cable and anchor
- Support cables fray where they pass through their fittings, and the anchor points in the door and the sidewall elongate under repeated shock loading from the ramp being dropped rather than lowered.
- Hinge line
- The full width hinge at the floor takes the entire weight of the door plus whatever is being driven over it. Worn hinge pins let the door sag, after which it no longer meets its latches squarely.
- Cam latches
- Once the door sags, the latches are asked to pull it into place. They wear, then bend, then stop holding the top seal closed.
- Seal
- A ramp door seal is a large perimeter with four corners, and it is the last thing to be blamed and the first thing to leak once the door geometry has moved.
Cargo door, ramp door and roll up door service is posted at $400 to $5,500 across 2 to 22 hours. See body repair for the panel side of the work.
What happens to the garage floor?
It takes abuse nothing else in the trailer takes. Knobbly tyres, fuel, oil, chain lube, sand and the point loads of a machine's stands all land on the same surface, and most factory garage floors are a coated plywood or a thin vinyl over laminate.
Two failures dominate. Tie down anchors pulling through the floor, because they were fastened to the floor panel rather than to the frame crossmembers under it. And the floor itself delaminating or going soft where fluids have soaked in around a fastener or at the ramp threshold.
The durable answer to both is to anchor into steel and to give the floor a surface that fuel does not attack. E track, D ring and tie down installation is posted at $250 to $2,500 across 1 to 10 hours, and spray in bedliner and box liner at $500 to $1,800 across 3 to 7 hours. Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500 across 4 to 40 hours.
Is the fuel station serviced here?
The plumbing and the tank mounting, yes. Toy haulers carry an onboard fuel station with a tank, a pump and a dispensing hose so the machines can be refuelled without leaving camp. It is a small fuel system living inside a recreational vehicle, and it deserves more attention than it usually gets.
What gets inspected: tank strap condition and mounting, hose and fitting integrity, pump wiring and fusing, the vent arrangement, and whether the compartment is sealed from the living space and drains outward. A fuel smell inside a toy hauler is never acceptable and is usually a vent or a fitting.
Hazmat and disposal is a flat $45 where chemicals, refrigerant or LP is involved. Twelve volt electrical work on the pump circuit is posted at $285 to $5,000 across 1 to 20 hours. Engine and drivetrain work of any kind is outside scope. Request a Quote for an inspection.
Questions we get asked
There are cracks at the top corners of my ramp opening. What are they?
Structural, in most cases. The corners of a ramp opening are the highest stress points on a toy hauler because the rear wall no longer ties the sidewalls together the way a closed wall would. Repairing the skin without addressing the frame around the opening lets the cracks return.
My ramp door will not seal along the top any more. Which part is worn?
Usually the hinge line at the floor rather than the latches at the top. A worn hinge lets the door sag, and the latches are then asked to pull the whole panel into position. Setting the hinge right first and adjusting the latches afterwards is the order that actually holds.
Can the garage be converted into living space or a patio deck?
Yes, and both are common requests. Interior build out and conversion is posted at $2,500 to $50,000 across 20 to 250 hours. A patio conversion adds railing and deck hardware to the ramp, which increases the load on the hinge and cables, so the door hardware is upgraded as part of the job.
Do you handle the separate garage air conditioning?
Yes. Many toy haulers carry a second roof unit over the garage, and AC replacement with hard start or soft start installation is posted at $750 to $4,500 across 2 to 14 hours. Ventilation system repair and upgrade runs $300 to $3,500 across 1 to 14 hours.
