Slide-Out Fifth Wheel Repair by Mechanism Type

How do the four common systems differ?
Enough that a technician who knows one well can be entirely wrong about another. The mechanism is identified before anything else on a slide job.
- Schwintek in wall
- Two motors driving toothed tracks in the side walls of the opening. Compact, common on smaller rooms, and very sensitive to synchronisation and to the room being square. Loses sync if one side meets resistance.
- Rack and pinion
- A shaft under the floor turning pinions that drive racks fixed to the room. Robust, forgiving, and prone to failure at the gear or the shaft support bearing rather than at the motor.
- Cable driven
- Cables in tension pull the room in and out, with the tension in the cables also holding the room in position. Requires correct adjustment, and a stretched cable shows as a room that no longer seals at the top.
- Hydraulic
- Rams driven by a central pump, used on large and heavy rooms. Strong and quiet. Failures are weeping ram seals, chafed hoses, sticking solenoids and a pump that has lost prime.

Why do slides usually fail for a reason that is not the motor?
Because a slide motor is a simple device pushing against whatever resistance it finds, and by the time it fails, something else has usually been making it work too hard for a long time. Replacing the motor without finding that cause gets the room moving again and puts the next failure a few months out.
The usual real causes: a seal that has hardened and now drags heavily across the whole travel, a roller or slide pad worn through so the floor is dragging on steel, a room that has racked slightly so it binds at one corner, or a trailer that is being operated without being levelled first so the whole opening is out of square.
That last one accounts for a great many slide failures and it is entirely preventable. A heavy trailer parked off level puts the frame in a twist, and the slide opening twists with it. What is going on with the seals?
Three profiles do three different jobs and owners frequently blame the wrong one. The wiper seal sweeps the top of the room as it travels and keeps water off the roof of the slide. The bulb seal compresses when the room is in or out to close the gap. The D seal handles the corners and the vertical edges.
In Southern California the failure mode is almost always UV and heat rather than wear. A trailer parked with the rooms out for a season bakes the exposed seal until it takes a set and stops recovering. It then leaks in the other position, which is why the leak appears when the trailer is travelling rather than when it is parked.

When does a slide room need rebuilding?
When the room itself has lost its shape rather than the mechanism having failed. A slide room is a shallow box: a floor, three walls and a roof, built light because the mechanism has to move it. Get water into the floor of that box and the framing softens, the floor dishes, and the room no longer sits square in its opening.
The symptoms come in as mechanism complaints. The room binds at one corner. The seal will not close along the bottom. The motor labours near the end of travel. All of those are the room telling you it is no longer rectangular.
Slide room rebuild and structural repair is posted at $1,500 to $7,500 across 10 to 35 hours. That involves opening the floor, replacing wet framing and panel, restoring the room's geometry and only then setting the mechanism. Doing the mechanism first on a distorted room is wasted work.
What does the estimate process look like?
The RV systems evaluation is $150, applied as a credit against an authorized repair, and it covers slide, awning, water, electrical and generator inspection. On a slide complaint that buys a proper diagnosis: mechanism identification, travel measurement, seal condition, room squareness and level check.
Where the fault is electrical and not obvious, an in depth diagnostic is 1 hour at $285, also applied as a credit. Mechanical and electrical labor is posted at $260 per hour and body and paint at $210 per hour.

Questions we get asked
My slide goes out crooked. Is the motor failing?
On a Schwintek system a crooked room means the two drives have lost synchronisation, usually because one side met resistance. Resyncing is quick. The important part is finding what caused the resistance, which is normally a dragging seal, a worn roller or a trailer that was operated off level.
Water comes in through the slide only when I am driving. Why not when parked?
Because the seal that leaks is the one that closes when the room is in, and that profile has usually taken a heat set while the trailer sat for months with the room out. It seals fine in the position it has been baked into and not in the other one.
Can a hydraulic slide be converted to electric or the other way round?
It is very rarely worth doing. The room, the opening and the frame were engineered around the system fitted, and conversion means new mounting structure as well as new hardware. Repairing the existing system properly is almost always the better economics, and the estimator will say so.
How do I stop the same slide problem coming back?
Level the trailer before operating any room, keep the seals conditioned and replace them before they harden, fit or maintain a topper so the room roof stays clean, and have the mechanism inspected on a schedule rather than after a failure. Most slide repairs here trace back to one of those four.
