Cutting and Polishing a Fresh Finish Until the Reflection Is Straight
Paint correction and polishing in the refinish department means levelling a finish: wet sanding out texture and imperfections, cutting to remove the sanding marks, then polishing to full gloss. It runs $500 to $2,000 across 5 to 21 hours and it is what separates a sprayed panel from a finished one.

What is actually wrong with a freshly sprayed panel?
Texture. Paint leaves the gun as droplets and they have to flow together on the surface. They never flow perfectly flat, so every sprayed panel has some degree of orange peel, a fine dimpled texture that scatters reflected light. On a large coach panel that scatter is what makes a reflection look wavy rather than sharp.
Then there are point defects. A dust nib that landed in the clear. A small run where the film went on heavy at a body line. A solvent pop where a bubble came through the skinning surface. None of those are failures of the paint job; they are the reality of spraying a 40 foot vehicle.
Correction removes them by taking the high points down until the surface is level, then restoring the gloss that levelling removed. That is the whole logic: sanding makes the surface flat and dull, and polishing makes the flat surface shiny again without making it wavy.
The same process applies to an existing finish carrying swirl marks, wash scratches and etching, which is where correction overlaps with reconditioning work under detailing paint correction. The difference here is that this work sits in the refinish sequence, on paint the shop just sprayed, with the film thickness known.
How does the multi stage sequence work?
- Cure window. Nothing is cut until the film has cured enough to sand without loading the paper and without shrinking afterward. Cutting early is why some corrected panels look textured again weeks later.
- Wet sanding. Progressively finer grades, kept wet, worked in one direction per grade so the previous grade's marks are visibly removed before moving on. This is the stage that actually flattens the surface.
- Compounding. An abrasive compound on a machine removes the finest sanding marks. The pad and speed choices are what keep heat out of the panel.
- Polishing. A finer abrasive removes the haze the compound left and brings gloss up.
- Finishing. A final refinement pass on dark colours, which show compounding haze that lighter colours hide.
- Inspection under multiple lights. The panel is checked under overhead light, under a raking handheld and, where possible, in daylight, because each reveals different defects.
Detail labour posts at $95 per hour. On a full coach, the hours are driven by surface area and by how many stages the colour needs, and dark colours always need more.
What limits how much correction is possible?
Film thickness. Every stage removes material, and there is a finite amount of clear coat. Cut through it and the only fix is respraying the panel.
On freshly sprayed work the shop knows what went down, so the available material is known. On an existing factory or previously repaired finish it is not, and that is why correction on an unknown finish is approached conservatively: measure where possible, start with the least aggressive combination that removes the defect, and accept leaving deeper scratches rather than chasing them through the clear.
The honest rule is that a defect you can feel with a fingernail is usually deeper than the safe removal depth. Those get improved rather than eliminated, and an owner told that up front is not disappointed at delivery.
Heat is the second limit. Machine work generates heat, and on a composite panel with a foam core behind it, heat has nowhere to go. That constrains pad speed and dwell time on RV panels in a way that does not apply to a steel car door, and it is a real reason coach correction takes longer per square foot.
Who should book this and when?
Three situations justify it clearly.
- After a refinish. Cut and polish is part of finishing a paint job properly, and it is what makes a sprayed panel match a factory finish rather than looking sprayed.
- After a blend. The blend edge is levelled and polished so the transition disappears, which is the final step in spot repair and blend matching.
- Before protection. Any coating locks in whatever is under it, so correction comes before ceramic coating application, never after.
Before booking, wash the vehicle and look at a panel in direct sun from several angles. Swirls that appear as a halo around a reflection are wash induced and correct out easily. Straight line scratches that catch a fingernail will improve rather than vanish. Etching from sprinkler water or bird droppings sits somewhere between. Bands are on the price sheet.
Questions we get asked
Is orange peel a defect in the paint job?
It is a normal property of sprayed finish, and factory finishes have it too. Whether it gets removed is a scope decision: levelling a full coach is many hours of wet sanding and polishing, so it is quoted as its own line rather than assumed.
How soon after painting can the finish be corrected?
After the film has cured sufficiently, which depends on the product and the conditions rather than on a fixed number of days. Cutting a finish that is still releasing solvent produces a surface that looks perfect and then texture returns as the film continues to shrink.
Can every scratch be polished out?
No. Anything that has cut through the clear into the colour is beyond polishing, and anything you can catch a fingernail on is usually close to that depth. Those areas are improved substantially but honestly, and the alternative is refinishing the panel.
Does polishing weaken the finish?
It removes a small amount of clear, and clear is what carries the ultraviolet protection, so repeated aggressive correction over years does shorten a finish's life. That is why the least aggressive effective combination is used and why a protective coating afterward is worth considering.
