Why the Paint Code on the Sticker Is Only a Starting Point

Colour matching finds a mix that disappears against the panel next to it, which is rarely the same as the factory formula. It shares the $500 to $5,000 band across 4 to 25 hours. Every match is proved on a spray out card under two light sources before any of it reaches the vehicle.

Why does the factory formula not match?

Three reasons stack up, and on an older coach all three apply at once.

Variance at the factory. A single colour code frequently has multiple production variants, because paint suppliers adjust batches and plants apply them slightly differently. Manufacturers publish variant decks precisely because the code alone does not identify what is on the vehicle.

Age. Pigments shift under ultraviolet exposure at different rates. Reds and some organic pigments fade fastest; whites yellow; metallics dull as the clear over them degrades. A coach that has spent ten years in Orange County sun is not the colour it was mixed as.

Prior repairs. Any panel that has been refinished before is already a match to a match. Matching to that panel rather than to the code is the only way a new repair blends with what is beside it.

So the question is never what colour the vehicle was. It is what colour the panel next to the repair is right now.

How is a match actually proved?

On a card, never on the vehicle. A spray out card is painted with the candidate mix using the same gun, the same pressure, the same number of coats and the same flash times that will be used on the repair, because all of those change how a metallic lays and therefore how it reads.

The card is then cleared, because clear changes colour. Judging a base coat without clear over it is judging a different colour than the one that will end up on the vehicle.

Then it is held against the cleaned panel and viewed three ways: straight on, at a shallow angle from one side, and at a shallow angle from the other. Metallics that match head on frequently diverge at angle, which is the flake orientation reading differently, and that is the failure mode that gets caught here rather than on the coach.

Finally the whole comparison is repeated under a second light source. A match under booth light that fails in daylight is called metamerism, and it is common with modern pigment mixes. Two light sources is the minimum standard before a mix is approved.

What happens when the colour cannot be found?

It gets built. Where a coach colour is discontinued, where the code is missing, or where the finish is a house scheme from a small builder, the mix is created by tinting from the closest starting formula and testing the result on cards until it disappears.

That is iterative and it is where the hours in this band go. Each iteration is mix, spray, clear, cure, compare. Several cycles are normal on a difficult colour, and a heavily faded red or a three stage pearl can take more than that.

Two shortcuts help. The first is finding an unfaded reference: the inside of a compartment door, an area under a removable trim piece or the section of sidewall that lived behind an awning. That shows the original colour and how far the exposed surface has drifted. The second is polishing a small test area of the panel first, since a faded surface with dead oxidation on it is not the colour you want to match to, and cutting it back reveals what is really there.

Where the vehicle is going to be extensively repaired anyway, refinishing whole panels from one mix removes the matching problem, which is sometimes the cheaper answer.

What can you provide to speed it up?

  • The paint code, from the chassis label, the coach data plate or the original build sheet if you still have it.
  • Any prior refinish paperwork, since a previously matched panel means matching to a mix rather than to a code.
  • A removable part in the same colour, such as a fuel door or a compartment hatch, which can go straight to the mixing bench.
  • Knowledge of whether the vehicle has been repainted, in whole or in part, and roughly when.
  • An honest answer about storage, since a coach kept covered has drifted far less than one that has not.

Questions we get asked

Can a camera or a phone app match my paint?

Not reliably on a vehicle finish. Consumer cameras apply their own colour processing, and no photograph captures how a metallic behaves at different viewing angles. A spray out card compared in hand under two light sources is still the standard because it tests the actual material.

My coach colour was discontinued. Is it still matchable?

Yes. The mix is built by tinting from the nearest formula and tested on cards until it disappears against the panel. That iteration is why colour work on a discontinued or heavily faded finish carries more hours than a current production colour.

Should I polish the panel before you match it?

Leave it. A test area gets polished as part of the matching process so the comparison is made against sound finish rather than dead oxidation. Polishing the whole panel first removes the reference showing how the surface has actually aged.
