Why do RV refrigerators fail the way they do?
Because most of them are absorption units, not compressor units, and absorption cooling has requirements that a household refrigerator does not.
An absorption refrigerator has no moving parts in the cooling circuit. Heat from a propane flame or an electric element drives ammonia out of solution, it condenses, evaporates in the cooling fins and absorbs back into water. That cycle only works within a fairly narrow set of conditions. It needs the vehicle to be reasonably level, because the fluid has to flow by gravity through the boiler tubes. It needs airflow behind the unit, through the lower vent and out the roof vent, to carry away the heat it rejects. It needs a clean burner and correct propane pressure on gas mode.
Failures follow from those requirements. Running an absorption unit badly out of level for extended periods lets sodium chromate crystallize and block the tubes, which permanently kills the cooling unit. Blocked venting, from a bird nest, debris or an aftermarket installation that closed off the airflow, causes poor cooling that looks like a failing unit. A dirty burner or a spider web in the burner tube causes intermittent operation on gas.
Compressor refrigerators, whether 12-volt units or residential units on an inverter, behave like household appliances instead. They tolerate being off level, they cool faster, and they draw meaningful current, which makes them an electrical system question as much as an appliance question. Conversions to 12-volt compressor units are common and they usually pair with a battery capacity upgrade.

What makes a rooftop air conditioner stop cooling?
Usually not the compressor. In order of frequency: airflow, capacitor, voltage, then the sealed system.
Airflow first. A clogged return filter, a crushed or disconnected duct, or a coil packed with dust cuts capacity drastically before it stops the unit entirely. Owners describe it as "it runs but it does not cool," which is exactly what restricted airflow produces.
Capacitors second. The run capacitor is the component that fails most often on these units, and a weak one produces a compressor that hums, draws high current and trips on thermal overload. Testing it takes minutes.
Voltage third. These units want full voltage to start. On a long or undersized extension cord, at a campground with a sagging pedestal, or with a generator that is loaded near its limit, the compressor cannot start and stalls. That is where a hard start or soft start capacitor kit earns its keep: a hard start kit gives the compressor extra torque to break away, and a soft start kit ramps it up so the inrush current is low enough for a smaller generator to carry. Installation runs under the $750 to $4,500 AC band.
The sealed system is last because it is not serviceable in the field on most RV units. These are hermetically sealed appliances, and a refrigerant leak generally means replacement rather than recharge. Hazmat and disposal adds $45 flat whenever refrigerant is handled.
How do RV furnaces and heat systems get diagnosed?
By following the sequence of operation, because a forced air propane furnace does its steps in a fixed order and the point where it stops tells you what failed.
The thermostat calls for heat. The control board energizes the blower. The blower comes up to speed and closes a sail switch, proving airflow. The board then opens the gas valve and energizes the igniter. Flame is established and a sense electrode confirms it. If flame is not sensed within a set time, the board locks out.
Match the symptom to the step. Nothing happens at all: thermostat, board or power. Blower runs but no ignition: sail switch not closing, which usually means restricted ducting or a weak blower motor, or a limit switch open. Ignition attempts but no flame: gas supply, valve or a spider web in the burner tube, which is genuinely one of the most common causes. Flame lights then drops out: flame sense electrode dirty or the ground path is poor.
Ducting is worth its own note. RV furnace ducts are flexible, they get crushed behind cabinetry during remodels, and a restricted duct triggers the limit switch and short cycles the furnace. A furnace that heats one room and not another is nearly always a duct problem rather than a furnace problem. Questions we get asked
My refrigerator works on shore power but not on propane. What is wrong?
Usually the gas side rather than the refrigerator: a dirty burner, a spider web in the burner tube, low propane pressure or a failed gas valve. The cooling unit itself is shared between both modes, so a unit that cools on electric has a functioning cooling unit.
Is it worth converting to a residential refrigerator?
It depends on the electrical system. A residential unit needs an inverter and enough battery capacity to run overnight, so the conversion is really a power system project with a refrigerator attached. Twelve volt compressor units are often the better middle ground because they draw far less.
Why does my air conditioner trip the breaker on a hot day?
High head pressure raises the current the compressor draws, and if the run capacitor is weak or the supply voltage is sagging, that draw goes past the breaker rating. Check the capacitor and the supply before assuming the compressor is failing, and consider a soft start kit if the coach runs on a smaller generator.
Do you replace RV cooktops and ovens?
Yes. Cooktop, range and microwave replacement runs $350 to $2,500 across 1 to 10 hours. The constraint is usually the cutout dimension and the gas line position, so measurements are taken before a replacement unit is ordered rather than after.
