# Water and Sewer Utility Fleet Repair

> A water or sewer utility fleet exists to respond to something that has already gone wrong, at a time nobody chooses. Readiness is therefore the standing requirement, and a vehicle that is technically available but has a compartment that will not open is not actually ready.

## What does readiness actually require?

More than a running engine. A [water and sewer maintenance vehicle](/vehicles/buses-fleet/water-sewer-maintenance-vehicle-repair/) is a mobile inventory of tools, fittings, safety equipment and materials, and readiness means every one of those is accessible at three in the morning in the rain.

That reframes the maintenance priority. A compartment door that needs two attempts is not a cosmetic issue, it is a delay at an incident. Compartment and baggage door repair runs $200 to $1,800, roll up and swing door service $400 to $4,500 and sliding door repair $400 to $3,500.

Lighting is the second readiness item. Work at night, in traffic, around an excavation, depends on the vehicle being seen and the work area being lit. Light bar, strobe and emergency lighting install runs $400 to $3,500, LED lighting upgrades $250 to $2,500 and lighting and wiring diagnostics $285 to $2,500.

The third is mounting integrity. Anything that carries weight, racks, cranes, reels, pumps, has to still be attached properly after years of vibration. Toolbox and crane body install runs $1,500 to $10,000 and structural welding $750 to $20,000.

## Why does this fleet corrode faster?

Because of what it carries and what it is exposed to. Chlorine and treatment chemicals, sewage, wet excavated material, and constant washdown afterwards. Compartments get loaded with wet tools and closed, which is the ideal condition for corrosion to work quietly.

Rust treatment and anti corrosion coating runs $400 to $3,500 and floor repair and replacement $500 to $9,500. On a service body the compartment floors and the lower door frames are where it starts, and they are exactly the areas nobody looks at because they are full of equipment.

The diagnostic worth doing is simple: pull everything out of every compartment once a year and look. Departments that do this find corrosion when it is a coating job. Departments that do not find it when a compartment floor gives way under a load, which is a body repair and a lost day.

Bring units with compartments emptied. A corrosion assessment through a full toolbox is not an assessment.

## How do you schedule a fleet that must stay available?

By defining the minimum outage and holding to it. Utilities are unusual in that utilisation is low and availability requirements are absolute: a truck may do very little on a given week and still cannot be gone when a main lets go.

So the sequence favours short, complete outages over long thorough ones. Door hardware, lighting, mounting, compartment repairs and liner work are all measurable in days and need no booth time. Body and refinish work is booth limited and belongs in a planned window with a spare arranged.

Where a department runs several similar units, waves keep coverage intact. Where a department runs one of something, the honest conversation is about whether a shorter partial repair now plus a complete one later beats one longer outage, and sometimes it does.

Shop hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:30am to 3:00pm, and all work happens in the shop where the lift capacity and the equipment are.

## What does the procurement side need?

The same things every public agency needs and one more. Line items with hours, part numbers, posted rates, per unit estimates carrying asset numbers and cost codes, and a total that a reviewer can check.

The extra item is scope clarity, because utility vehicles carry equipment we do not touch. Pumps, jetters, vacuum systems, valve exercisers, reels and the hydraulics that drive them stay with the specialists who support them. Our scope is the vehicle, the body, the compartments and doors, structure, mounting, paint, markings, lighting and wiring, and the chassis service items alongside. Engine and drivetrain work is not performed here.

Stating that boundary on the quote prevents the most common review question, which is whether a single vendor is being asked to certify something outside their competence. We would rather be explicit about where our work stops.

## Questions

### A compartment floor has rusted through. Can it be repaired in place?

Usually yes, by cutting out the affected section, treating the surrounding metal and replating, provided the body structure around it is sound. Expect the repair area to extend past the visible damage, because corrosion on these bodies travels under coating before it breaks through.

### Do you service the pumps and jetting equipment?

No. Pumps, jetters, vacuum systems, valve exercisers, reels and their hydraulics stay with the specialists who support that equipment. We handle the vehicle, the body, compartments and doors, structure, mounting, paint, markings, lighting and wiring, and we coordinate rather than work around their installations.

### How do we keep a single specialised unit available?

By splitting the work. Readiness items, doors, latches, lighting, mounting and compartment repairs, are days rather than weeks and need no booth time. Body and refinish work goes into a planned window with coverage arranged. Two short outages usually beat one long one for a fleet with no spare.

### Can you install additional lighting or a work area light package?

Yes. Emergency lighting install runs $400 to $3,500 and LED lighting upgrades $250 to $2,500. It is worth combining with any other outage, since much of the labor is access that is already open when compartment or body work is underway.
