# Low-Roof Van Repair and Shallow Crown Roof Panel Work

> A low-roof van has a wide, shallow crown roof panel that shows every imperfection and will oil can if a dent is filled rather than pulled. OCRV Center repairs hail and debris damage, reinforces rack and ladder mounting into thin roof steel, and works the side door aperture, in shop at Yorba Linda for Tustin owners.

## A shallow crown is the least forgiving panel on any van

Crown is the gentle curve pressed into a panel to make it hold its shape. A car roof has a decent amount of it. A low-roof van has very little, because the roof has to stay flat to keep overall height under garage clearance while still spanning the full width of the body. What is left is a wide sheet with barely any shape and a handful of ribs underneath.

Two things follow from that. Any deformation is visible from a long way off, because a flat surface reflects a straight line and a straight line shows every bend. And any repair that adds material rather than restoring shape will show, because filler over a shallow crown creates a slightly different curvature than the panel around it.

Oil canning is the specific failure. The panel loses its preload, so it takes up two stable positions and pops between them with temperature or with a hand pressed on it. The owner sees a roof that looks fine in the shade and wavy in the sun. It is not a paint fault and no amount of polishing addresses it, because the metal itself is unstable.

Collision repair and refinish on a van is posted at **$1,500 to $40,000** across 10 to 200 hours, and blending on a panel this size runs **$500 to $5,000** at 4 to 25 hours. Both bands, along with the posted labor rates, are on the [prices page](/prices/).

## Pulled and glued, not filled

The correct approach on a shallow crown roof is to restore the original shape from outside and add as close to nothing as possible. In practice that means glue pulling.

- Clean and warm the area so the adhesive tabs bond properly to the paint rather than lifting it.
- Read the damage with a line board. Reflected straight lines make low spots and high spots obvious in a way that fingertips do not on a panel this wide.
- Set tabs and lift progressively from the outside of the damage inward, working the high ring down between lifts rather than pulling the centre in one go.
- Relieve tension in the panel with light tapping so the metal returns to a stable position instead of springing between two.
- Reassess against the line board, and only then decide whether any skim is needed at all.

Done this way most roof damage is corrected with little or no filler and no paint at all, which is both cheaper and more stable than a fill and refinish. When paint is unavoidable, the blend runs to the roof rails on both sides, because there is nowhere in the middle of a flat roof to hide an edge.

Estimator note: if a roof panel has already been repaired with filler and is oil canning, budget for stripping that repair out rather than working over it. Pulling steel that is loaded with hardened filler does not work, and the wave will come straight back.

## Racks and ladders bolted into thin roof steel

The roof on a low-roof van was never designed to carry a rack full of pipe, and the ribs underneath are spaced for structure rather than for wherever a rack manufacturer put its feet. Bolt a loaded rack straight through the skin and the load concentrates at each foot. The first symptom is a dimple at every mounting point. The second is a fastener hole that has ovalled and started to leak.

Doing it properly means spreading the load. Feet land over ribs where the layout allows, backing plates distribute the load across more than one rib where it does not, and every penetration is sealed rather than trusted to a rubber pad. Roof rack and ladder install is posted at $400 to $3,500 across 2 to 14 hours, and roof reinforcement with a solar or heavy duty rack runs $750 to $6,500 across 4 to 30 hours.

Existing racks get inspected on any van that comes in for roof work. If there are dimples at the feet, the roof is already carrying more than it should and reinforcement is quoted alongside the repair, because repairing the dents without addressing the mounting simply schedules the same job again.

## Hail, falling debris and the access problem inside

Hail and falling debris are the other two sources of low-roof damage, and they behave differently. Hail leaves many shallow dents spread over the panel with the paint intact, which is ideal for glue pulling and often needs no refinishing at all. A dropped branch or a piece of freight leaves one deep, sharp dent, frequently with the paint broken, and a sharp crease in a low crown panel has stretched the metal rather than just displaced it.

Stretched metal is why a single deep dent can cost more than fifty hail dents. The steel has to be shrunk back before it will hold shape, and that is slow work on a thin panel where too much heat causes more distortion than it cures.

Interior access is the other constraint that separates this van from a taller one. On a high roof van a technician stands inside and pushes from underneath. On a low-roof van there is no standing room, the headliner or an upfit liner is usually in the way, and reaching the underside means lying across a load floor at an angle that gives no leverage. That is the practical reason low-roof work is done from outside with tabs: not preference, geometry.

The side door aperture gets checked at the same time. A roof that has been pushed down in the middle changes the shape of the opening, and a sliding door that suddenly binds at the top after a roof impact is telling you the aperture moved. The shop sits in Yorba Linda, a short run from Tustin on the 55, open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:30am to 3:00pm. There is no charge for insurance walk ins. ## What is included

- Damage read against a line board before any technique is chosen
- Glue pull correction from outside wherever the paint film is intact
- Tension relief so the panel settles in one position instead of two
- Backing plates and sealed penetrations on any rack or ladder refit
- Side door aperture gap check after any impact that moved the roof

## Questions

### What is oil canning and why did it appear after my roof was repaired?

Oil canning is a panel that has lost its preload and now sits in two stable positions, popping between them with heat or pressure. It usually follows a repair where a dent was filled instead of having the metal pulled back to shape and its tension relieved.

### Can hail damage on a van roof be fixed without repainting?

Often, yes. Hail leaves many shallow dents with the paint intact, which suits glue pulling from the outside. If the metal comes back cleanly against a line board, no refinishing is required, which is both cheaper and more stable than filling and painting.

### Why can you not just push the dent out from inside the van?

There is no room. A low-roof van has no standing height, the headliner or upfit liner is in the way, and reaching the underside means working across the load floor with no leverage. Glue pulling from outside is the practical answer, not a shortcut.

### My roof rack has left dimples at every foot. Is that a problem?

It means the load is concentrating at the mounting points instead of spreading across the roof structure. Left alone the holes oval and start to leak. Reinforcement with backing plates is quoted with the dent repair at $750 to $6,500 across 4 to 30 hours.
