# Extended Cargo Van Repair, Rear Overhang and Long Panels

## Everything that matters happens behind the rear axle

Take a long wheelbase van and add body length behind the rear wheels and you get a vehicle that measures the same at the front and behaves completely differently at the back. That overhang is unsupported: there is no axle under it, so it cantilevers off the rear crossmember and carries load on the rails alone.

Two consequences follow. The first is that anything heavy stored at the very rear applies leverage to the rails rather than sitting on the suspension, which is why extended vans loaded tail heavy show sagging door apertures at the back long before an equivalent standard length unit does. The second is that the rear corners of the van are simply further from the driver than instinct expects.

## Backing damage: the same four spots, over and over

Reversing accounts for most of the work these vans come in for, and it lands in a predictable set of places.

**Rear lower corner of the quarter**: The single most common damage on an extended van. It contacts posts, bollards and other vehicles because it is the furthest point from the mirrors and it swings wide on a turn.

**Rear bumper outer end**: Bent inboard and upward, taking the mounting bracket with it. The bracket is checked at the crossmember before the visible bumper is quoted.

**Barn door lower edges**: Damaged when a door is open and the van is moved, or when a corner strike pushes the aperture out of square and the doors stop meeting.

**Rear sill and load floor lip**: Crushed by contact with dock edges. It is easy to overlook, and it is exactly where a seal has to sit flat to keep water out.

A quarter repair here is worth doing properly rather than quickly, because the rear quarter on an extended van is one of the largest single panels on any vehicle the shop handles.

## The added section and the joint the factory left behind

Extended vans are not simply longer pressings. The extra length is added as a body section with a factory joint, usually behind the rear wheel arch, where the roof, sides and floor are joined and sealed. That joint is a legitimate part of the vehicle, not damage, and it is a line that repair work has to respect.

Two things go wrong there. First, the joint is a stress riser: a rear impact concentrates at the joint rather than distributing along the panel, so damage often stops abruptly at that line. Second, the seam sealer over the joint is a maintenance item nobody maintains. Once it cracks, water finds the lap and corrosion starts inside the joint where it cannot be seen.

When a repair crosses that joint the seam sealer is removed, the lap is cleaned and treated, and the sealer is reapplied to match the factory profile rather than smeared flat. A joint finished flat looks wrong on a van this long, because the eye follows that line down the whole side.

## Longer panels mean longer blends

Paint work on an extended van costs more than the same repair on a standard unit for a simple reason: the panel is longer, and a blend has to run out somewhere. On a car the blend dies at a body line within a foot or two. On an extended van the sidewall runs unbroken for a very long stretch, and stopping a blend in the middle of it leaves an edge that shows in low sun on the 91 every afternoon.

So the blend is carried to a natural break, which may be the sliding door aperture ahead of the repair or the rear corner behind it, whichever gives a clean termination. That decision can double the paint hours on an otherwise small repair, and it is called out on the estimate rather than buried in it. Color match blending and panel blending is posted at $500 to $5,000 across 4 to 25 hours.

Color is matched to the panel in daylight with a spray out card. On a fleet unit that has spent years on Orange County routes, the original code will not match what is on the van, and pretending otherwise produces a repair that is visible from across a parking lot.

## Tail swing, and how a rear hit loads the rails forward

Tail swing is the arc the rear corner sweeps when the front wheels are turned. On an extended van that arc is wide enough to catch a vehicle in the next bay while the driver is watching the front of the van clear a post. It is the single most common cause of the damage described above, and it is worth mentioning to new drivers before they discover it.

A rear impact behaves differently here too. With a long overhang, the impact point sits well behind the axle, so the hit acts as a lever: force at the bumper is multiplied by the distance back to the crossmember and delivered into the frame rails as a bending and lifting load rather than a straight rearward push. Damage therefore travels forward, and the rails can be tweaked ahead of the axle even when the sheet metal aft of it looks moderate.

## More roof to reseal, and how to book the van in

The other thing extra length gives you is extra roof. More square footage, more seam length at the roof rails, more fastener penetrations if there is a rack, and more surface holding heat all day in a yard. ### Why is a rear quarter repair more expensive on an extended van?
