# Class B Camper Van Repair Near Tustin, California

## Why does a Class B dent so easily?

Because the body is a van body, and modern van sheet metal is thin. A Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster slab side is a very large, very flat, very lightly gauged panel with almost no crown to it. Crown is what gives a panel stiffness. Without it, a shopping cart nudge does not make a neat dent, it makes a shallow depression that telegraphs across half the panel and shows up in every reflection.

That changes the repair method. On a crowned car fender you can push a dent out and the metal wants to return to shape. On a slab van side the metal has no memory to work with, so the repair is slower and more delicate: often glue pull and shrink rather than hammer and dolly, and often more filler discipline than the same size damage on a car would need. Rush it and the panel oil cans, which is the wobble you see when a flat panel is left with internal stress.

The other consequence is paint. A long flat side is the hardest surface in bodywork to make look right, because it reflects a straight line and any wave in the surface bends that line visibly. Color matched blending on a van is posted at $500 to $5,000 across 4 to 25 hours, and on a Class B it is nearly always the right call rather than a spot repair that stops at a body line.

A Class B also carries far more weight than the van left the factory with. Cabinets, a water tank, a house battery bank and an awning all hang off the body structure, and a panel that has to be pulled has cabinetry bolted to the inside of it. Access is half the job. ## What happens to the roof: fixed cap or poptop?

Class B builds split into two roof strategies, and they fail in completely different ways.

A fixed high roof is either the factory tall van roof or an aftermarket fiberglass cap bonded to the cut roof rail. On the bonded type, the joint between the cap and the steel is the whole story. A parking structure strike or even repeated flex loads the front of the cap and cracks the bond line, and the first symptom the owner sees is a drip at the front headliner, not a crack. The repair is to release the bond back to sound material, refit, rebond and reseal, then refinish. Roof reinforcement and solar roof rack work sits at $750 to $6,500 across 4 to 30 hours.

A poptop is a mechanical assembly: a lifting roof cap, scissor or strut arms, a soft bellows and a set of latches. Poptops fail at the latch alignment first, the strut second and the bellows stitching third. A cap that will not sit down evenly is nearly always an arm or a mount, not the latch you are fighting with. Bellows fabric and the vinyl windows in it are consumable, and they perish faster in Southern California sun than most owners expect.

## Does a bumper repair really need sensor recalibration?

On a current Sprinter or Transit, yes. The front bumper on these vans carries or sits directly in front of the radar for adaptive cruise and collision mitigation, and the windshield carries the forward camera for lane keeping and sign recognition. Removing and reinstalling either one moves the sensor relative to the vehicle centreline, and a sensor that is a fraction of a degree out reports a target in the wrong place.

ADAS scan and recalibration is posted at **$275 to $1,800** across 1 to 7 hours, and on a post collision file it is not an upsell, it is part of returning the vehicle to the condition it arrived in. The scan runs before teardown as well as after reassembly, so there is a record of what was faulted before anyone touched the van.

House systems get the same treatment. A Class B carries a lithium house bank, an inverter, a 12 volt distribution panel and often a shore power inlet, and a rear or side impact can pinch a cable run behind a panel. 12V and 110V electrical diagnostics and repair is posted at $285 to $5,000 across 1 to 20 hours. ## Questions

### Is a Class B the same thing as a camper van conversion?

Not for repair purposes. A Class B left the factory as a finished RV, so the build quality and the mounting hardware follow a production standard and parts are usually available. A conversion was built afterward, sometimes by the owner, and the fastening, wiring and cabinet mounting are one off. Both are repaired here, but they are estimated differently.

### Can you fix a dent without repainting the whole side?

Sometimes. If the paint is unbroken and the damage is shallow, paintless techniques may pull it. Once the paint is cracked or the panel is stretched, refinish is required, and on a flat van side the refinish gets blended into adjacent panels so the repair does not stop at a visible edge.

### My poptop will not close flush on one corner. What is that?

Usually a lift arm or a mounting bracket rather than the latch. Arms bend if the top is lifted with the latches still engaged, or if the van is driven with the top not fully seated. The fix is to measure the arm geometry against the opposite side, straighten or replace, then reset the latch alignment last.

### Do you work on the van chassis as well?

### How long does a Class B collision repair take?

The posted van band runs 10 to 200 hours, which is a wide spread because a bumper and a quarter panel are different jobs.
