# Overland Camper Repair After Washboard and Trail Damage

> An overland camper takes sustained vibration and impact loads that a highway trailer never sees, so it fails through fatigue rather than through single events. OCRV Center repairs cracked structure, torn mounts, dust intrusion and underbody damage in shop. Camper body work is posted at $750 to $50,000 across 5 to 250 hours.

## Why is fatigue the defining failure mode?

A highway trailer sees a low frequency, low amplitude input almost all the time. An overland camper sees a high frequency input, sustained, for hours. Washboard road excites the whole structure at a frequency that finds whatever resonates, and it does not stop until the road does.

What that does to a build is entirely different to what a pothole does. A pothole breaks the weakest single component. Vibration finds every joint that was adequate rather than generous and works it loose over time. Screws back out. Adhesive lines craze. A weld that was slightly cold at the toe starts a crack that grows a millimetre a trip.

The tell is noise. Owners describe a rattle they cannot locate, a creak on uneven ground, a cabinet door that no longer latches. Those are structural symptoms being reported as annoyances, and inspecting them properly is how a small correction stays small. Structural welding and repair is posted at $750 to $20,000 across 5 to 80 hours.

## Where does the damage concentrate?

At every interface between two things that move at different rates. In practice that means a short list that is worth checking after any serious trip.

- Camper to bed tie downs and turnbuckles, and the frame or bed rail material they pull against.
- Cabinet and appliance anchors, particularly anything heavy such as a fridge or a battery bank.
- Water tank straps and their mounting points, which carry a moving mass over rough ground.
- Awning and rack mounts, which act as levers against the sidewall.
- Wiring passing through bulkheads, where a grommet has vibrated out and the loom is now against bare metal.
- Plumbing joints and fittings, which loosen and then weep long before they burst.

Re anchoring is unglamorous and it is most of the work. Cabinetry repair, refacing and custom build is posted at $500 to $7,500 across 4 to 35 hours, and 12V electrical work at $285 to $5,000 across 1 to 20 hours. ## How is dust intrusion actually stopped?

By pressurising the interior, not by adding sealant. Fine desert dust will find any path where air can move, and on a camper that means every unsealed penetration, every hatch, every drawer slide cutout and the gap around the entry door. Adding sealant to visible gaps chases the symptom and never wins.

The approach that works is to identify the intended air path, filter it, and seal everything else so the interior sits slightly above ambient when moving. That means proper door and hatch seals in good condition, gasketed cable and plumbing penetrations rather than caulked ones, and a considered vent arrangement rather than four random openings.

Ventilation system repair and upgrade is posted at $300 to $3,500 across 1 to 14 hours, and roof vent and fan replacement at $250 to $1,200 across 1 to 5 hours. Window and frame reseal runs $250 to $3,500 across 1 to 14 hours. All are on the [prices page](/prices/).

## What about underbody and departure angle strikes?

They are common and they are usually reported late, because the owner did not see the strike and the damage is out of sight. A rock that catches a waste tank, a drain line, a step or the lower edge of the camper does not always produce a noise anyone notices over a diesel on a rough track.

What it does produce is a slow leak, a hanging line or a deformed structural member that the owner discovers weeks later. Black and grey tank repair or replacement is posted at $750 to $8,500 across 5 to 35 hours, and step replacement at $400 to $2,000 across 2 to 8 hours.

Prevention is cheaper than repair here. Skid plates, tank guards and relocated drain routing are fabrication jobs, quoted per vehicle, and they cost far less than the tank they protect. [Request a Quote](/contact/) and bring the camper in for an underbody inspection after a long trip.

## Questions

### I have a rattle I cannot find. Is that worth bringing in?

Yes. On an overland camper an unlocatable rattle is frequently a fastener or a weld that has begun to work, and the noise is the earliest warning available. Finding it while it is a noise costs a fraction of what it costs after the joint has opened up and taken the surrounding structure with it.

### Can you reinforce a camper before a long trip rather than after?

That is the better order. A pre trip inspection covering tie downs, cabinet anchors, tank straps, wiring passes and plumbing joints catches the marginal items while they are still cheap. Camper pre purchase and condition inspections are posted at $300 to $900 across 2 to 4 hours.

### My camper takes on dust no matter how much I seal it. Why?

Because sealing individual gaps chases the symptom. Dust enters wherever air can, so the fix is to control the air path: filtered intake, working door and hatch seals, gasketed penetrations, and a considered vent arrangement so the interior sits slightly above ambient pressure when moving.

### Is an overland camper repaired differently to a standard truck camper?

The shell work overlaps but the priorities differ. On a highway truck camper the estimate centres on seals, roof and body damage. On an overland camper it centres on fatigue: anchors, welds, mounts and anything that carries a moving mass over sustained vibration.
