# Fifth Wheel Repair: Pin Box, Upper Deck and Front Cap

> A fifth wheel hangs a raised bedroom deck over the tow vehicle bed and transfers its pin weight through a box welded to the frame. OCRV Center repairs that structure, the front cap above it, slide rooms and the roof, in shop. Camper collision and body work is posted at $750 to $50,000 across 5 to 250 hours.

## What actually carries the load at the pin?

Not the pin box you can see. The pin box is a bracket. What carries the load is the section of main frame it bolts or welds to, and the way that frame is tied into the upper deck structure above it. Anywhere between fifteen and twenty five percent of the trailer's weight goes through that junction, and it goes through it in a direction that changes constantly as the truck pitches.

Failures there are the most consequential thing that happens to a fifth wheel, and they announce themselves subtly. A hairline in the paint on the front cap near the pin. A cabinet door in the bedroom that has started to swing shut on its own. A creak on hitching that was not there last season. Those are geometry symptoms.

Assessment means measuring the frame, not looking at the bracket. Frame and structural welding and repair is posted at **$750 to $20,000** across 5 to 80 hours, and the relevant page is [frame and structural repair](/services/frame-structural-repair/). On a fifth wheel this is the one area where a wait and see approach is the wrong call.

## Why is the front cap the most damaged panel on the trailer?

Because it is the only part of the trailer that lives directly behind a truck's rear wheels at freeway speed. Everything the truck picks up gets thrown at it: gravel, road debris, water, tar. The cap is a large moulded fiberglass piece with a gelcoat finish, and gelcoat under sustained stone impact chips, then crazes, then lets water into the laminate behind.

The second cause is height. Owners misjudge a fuel canopy or a low branch, and because the cap is the tallest and most forward point of the trailer, it takes the hit alone. A cap strike is also frequently accompanied by a frame question, since the impact loads back into the upper deck.

Fiberglass cap repair front and rear is posted at $750 to $12,000 across 4 to 60 hours. Full front or rear cap replacement runs $4,500 to $25,000 across 30 to 120 hours, which is a large jump and is why an early gelcoat repair is worth doing. Colour matched blending sits at $500 to $5,000 across 4 to 25 hours.

## What goes wrong in the upper deck bedroom?

Sag and water, usually together. The bedroom floor over the pin is a cantilevered deck built from framing and a laminate floor panel, supported at the rear by the main sidewalls and at the front by the cap structure. It carries a mattress, two people, storage under the bed and often a washer and dryer prep.

Water reaches it two ways: down from the front cap seam above, or in from the front window frame. Once the framing under the mattress platform is wet, it stops carrying load and the deck starts to dish. Owners notice a floor that feels springy near the wardrobe long before they notice moisture.

Repair means opening the deck, replacing wet framing and panel back to sound material, and correcting whatever let water in first. Water damage restoration and subfloor replacement is posted at $750 to $15,000 across 4 to 60 hours. Window and frame reseal runs $250 to $3,500 across 1 to 14 hours. ## How are landing gear and leveling handled?

The front landing legs on a fifth wheel are not just for parking. They lift the front of the trailer clear during hitching, which means they carry the pin weight momentarily and take a shock load every time the truck backs under. Electric legs strip gears, hydraulic legs weep at the ram seal, and both bend if extended onto soft ground.

Leveling jack service across manual, electric and hydraulic systems is posted at $300 to $4,500 across 1 to 18 hours, and full leveling system service on Lippert, HWH, BigFoot, Power Gear and BAL equipment at $350 to $6,500 across 2 to 25 hours.

Underneath, axles, brakes and suspension complete the picture. Trailer suspension service across leaf, torsion and air ride is $400 to $6,500 across 2 to 25 hours, electric and hydraulic brake service $300 to $5,500 across 1 to 22 hours, and wheel bearing repack $250 to $1,200 across 1 to 5 hours.

## Questions

### There is a crack in the front cap near the pin box. Should I worry?

Have it measured. A crack in that specific area is frequently the visible end of movement in the frame or upper deck structure rather than a gelcoat problem on its own. Repairing the fiberglass without checking the structure behind it means the crack returns, usually in the same season.

### My bedroom floor feels soft near the wardrobe. What causes that?

Almost always water that arrived from the front cap seam or a front window frame and soaked the framing under the mattress platform. The floor is a cantilevered deck, so wet framing stops carrying load and the deck dishes. The repair opens the deck, replaces wet material and corrects the water entry point.

### Can you reseal a fifth wheel roof and the front cap seam together?

That is the sensible way to do it, since the cap seam is where most fifth wheel water intrusion starts. Roof recoat and reseal is posted at $750 to $4,500 across 4 to 20 hours, and full membrane replacement in EPDM, TPO or fiberglass at $3,500 to $18,000 across 20 to 80 hours.

### Do you work on fifth wheel hitches and pin boxes?

Yes. Hitch, coupler, gooseneck and fifth wheel service is posted at $400 to $5,500 across 2 to 22 hours, and fifth wheel plate installation on the tow vehicle at $1,500 to $5,500 across 8 to 22 hours. Pin box replacement is quoted with the frame inspection rather than on its own.

### Will my insurer cover a fifth wheel structural repair?

If it results from a covered event, generally yes, and the shop bills carriers direct including Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, Mercury, Allstate, Liberty Mutual and Foremost. The collision estimate carries no charge for insurance walk ins. Insurance billed jobs may use carrier negotiated labor rates that differ from posted retail rates.
