## Module construction: Type I, Type II and Type III

The three types describe how the patient compartment relates to the cab. A Type I is a modular box mounted on a truck chassis with a conventional cab, and the module and cab are entirely separate structures. A Type II is a van conversion, so the patient area is the original van body with a raised roof and interior work rather than a separate module. A Type III is a module on a cutaway chassis, where the module is built around the back of a van cab and the crew passes between them.

Type I and Type III modules are welded or riveted aluminum: extruded corner posts, sheet skins, a floor structure, and a subframe that ties the module to the chassis rails through mounts designed to absorb frame twist. That mounting system is the first thing checked after any significant impact. A module that has shifted on its mounts will show as a door that suddenly does not latch the same way, or as a fresh crack at the top corner of the rear opening, long before anybody notices the module itself sitting a fraction of an inch off center.

## Openings that move: the pass through boot, doors and the rear step

Every opening on an ambulance moves in service, and every one of them is a leak path or a wear point.

### The cab to module pass through boot
On a Type III the crew opening between the cab and the module is closed by a flexible boot, because the two structures flex independently. That boot is a consumable. It hardens, splits at the fold radius, and then feeds water and road noise straight into the module at the point where the aluminum meets the steel cab. A split boot is also why so many modules show corrosion staining on the forward bulkhead. Replacing it means cleaning both flanges to bare substrate, isolating the dissimilar metals and setting the new boot with the correct sealant, not caulking the split.

### Compartment doors, hinges and latches
Exterior compartment doors on an ambulance cycle constantly and carry heavy loaded shelving behind them. Continuous hinges wear at the pin, rotary latches lose their striker adjustment, and the doors start needing a shove. The repair is at the hinge flange and the striker backing, not at the door skin. ### Rear entry doors and the step
The rear doors take the cot in and out and get held open in wind. Hinges pull at the pillar, and the rear step below them takes cot wheels, boots and the occasional curb strike. Step replacement runs $400 to $2,000 at 2 to 8 hours. A rear opening pulled out of square by an impact is straightened before the doors are rehung, because doors adjusted to a distorted opening will bind again as the module flexes.

## Patient compartment: coved corners and a surface that still cleans

The interior of a patient compartment is not decorated, it is specified. Wall and ceiling panels run into coved corners so there is no square internal angle to trap fluid, joints are closed with welded or bonded seams, and the flooring turns up the wall to form a continuous cove at the base. The whole point is a surface that can be cleaned and disinfected with nothing for contamination to hide in.

That changes what counts as an acceptable interior repair. A panel patched with a butt joint and a trim strip over it satisfies the eye and fails the purpose, because the trim strip is a new crevice. Interior work here restores continuous cleanable surfaces: panels replaced full width where possible, coving reinstated at every wall to floor and wall to ceiling transition, and joints closed and sealed rather than covered.

Anchorage is the other half of the interior. Cabinets and the cot mount bolt through the floor and the wall structure into backing, and those anchors have to hold in a deceleration event with a loaded cot. Any repair that disturbs a cot mount or a cabinet anchor gets the backing exposed and verified from underneath, with fasteners renewed rather than reused.

## Back in service: chevron striping, graphics and lighting reinstall

Rear chevron striping is a high visibility panel of alternating reflective bands across the back of the module, and it is one of the first things a repair destroys and the last thing to go back on. It is reapplied to a fully cured finish, laid out to the pattern the agency runs, with the bands aligned across the door gap so the chevron reads as one piece with the doors closed. Decal and graphics replacement is posted at $500 to $5,500 at 3 to 25 hours, and reflective tape and compliance marking at $250 to $1,200 at 1 to 6 hours.

Emergency lighting comes off for body work and goes back with the panel repair rather than after it, so grommets, gaskets and the wiring pass through get sealed while the panel is still accessible. Light bar, strobe and emergency lighting install is posted at $400 to $3,500 at 2 to 14 hours.

## How this job runs

1. **Module and mount survey**: The module is measured against the chassis rails and its subframe mounts are inspected before any body panel is touched, since a shifted module explains most door and crack symptoms.
2. **Wet path tracing**: The pass through boot, compartment seals, roof penetrations and lighting grommets are traced for water intrusion, because corrosion inside an aluminum module usually started at a seal, not at the impact.
3. **Structure and skin repair**: Damaged extrusions and skins are sectioned and welded, dissimilar metal interfaces are isolated, and openings are brought back to square before any door or hardware is refitted.

## Questions

### The rear doors will not latch the same way after a minor hit. Why?

The module has almost certainly shifted on its subframe mounts or the rear opening has pulled out of square. Adjusting the doors to a distorted opening hides it briefly. The opening is measured and straightened first, then the doors are rehung.

### Can you replace a cracked interior wall panel without full trim strips?

Yes, and that is the goal. A trim strip over a butt joint creates a new crevice in a compartment that is supposed to clean out completely. Panels are replaced full width where the structure allows and joints are closed and sealed instead.

### Is a module remount onto a new chassis something you handle?

Yes. Removing a sound module, preparing and setting the subframe mounts on the replacement chassis, closing the cab to module joint and reinstating the boot, wiring pass through, striping and lighting is body and structural work and sits inside our scope.
