# RV Slide-Out Repair and Adjustment

## Which slide system is on my vehicle and why does it matter?

Four systems dominate, and the correct repair for one is the wrong repair for another. Identifying the system is the first thing that happens on the shop floor.

**Schwintek in-wall.** Two vertical gear racks inside the side walls of the room, each driven by its own motor through a worm gear reduction. Compact, light, common on bedroom slides and lighter rooms. Because the two motors are independent, they can drift out of synchronization, and a room that is out of sync binds diagonally in its opening. The controller has a timing procedure to re-sync them, and running the switch harder does not accomplish it. Schwintek systems also depend on the room being properly supported and the wall being straight, so a coach with a sagging sidewall will keep pushing its Schwintek out of sync.

**Lippert through-frame and in-wall.** Heavier duty, driving the room on rails that pass under the floor, with either an electric actuator or a hydraulic cylinder. Failures are mechanical: bent rails, worn bushings, hydraulic leaks and pump problems rather than sync loss.

**Power Gear rack and pinion.** A toothed rack under the room engaged by pinions on a common cross shaft, so the two sides are mechanically tied and cannot lose sync with each other. Failures are gear tooth wear, sheared shaft couplers and motor brush wear.

**BAL Accu-Slide.** Cable driven, common on travel trailers. Cables stretch, fray and jump their pulleys. Adjustment is cable tension, and a frayed cable is replaced rather than re-tensioned.

## What does a room that stops halfway actually mean?

Usually one of five things, and they are distinguished by what the system does when you try again.

If the motor runs but the room does not move, the drive is disconnected: a sheared coupler, a stripped gear, a jumped cable or a hydraulic cylinder that lost pressure. If the motor hums and stalls, the room is binding mechanically or the battery voltage has dropped below what the motor needs under load, which is extremely common and often mistaken for a motor failure. If nothing happens at all, the fault is upstream: a controller, a relay, a fuse, a switch or the wiring to them.

If the room moves crooked, it is either a sync problem on an independent-motor system or a mechanical problem on a linked system. If the room moves fully but will not seal, the room is out of adjustment in its opening even though the drive is working correctly.

House battery condition is the sleeper cause. Slide motors pull heavy current, and a bank that reads 12.4 volts at rest can sag under load to a level where the motor stalls and the controller faults. Diagnosing a slide without checking voltage at the motor under load produces a lot of unnecessary parts replacement. That check happens as part of the RV systems estimate at $150, applied as a credit against an authorized repair.

## How do you rebuild a slide room floor?

By opening it. A slide room floor is a laminated panel, usually a thin plywood or luan skin over foam or lightweight framing, and it takes load at only a few points: the rails or the rollers it rides on. When water gets in at the seal line, the core softens and the floor begins to sag between those support points.

A sagging floor causes cascading problems. The room no longer sits level in its opening, so the seals do not compress evenly, so more water gets in. The drive system fights an out-of-plane room, so gears wear and motors work harder. The interior flooring inside the room telegraphs the sag.

Rebuild means removing the room's interior finish, cutting out the failed core, replacing it with matched material, restoring the bond between skin and core, and re-establishing the flat plane the room needs. The rails, rollers and support brackets are inspected while it is open, because a bent rail that caused the sag will cause it again.

## Questions

### Why does my Schwintek slide keep going out of sync?

Because the two motors are independent and any resistance on one side lets that side fall behind. Persistent sync loss usually points at a mechanical cause: a dragging seal, a sagging room floor, an out of square opening or low voltage at the motors under load. Re-timing without fixing the cause lasts weeks.

### Can I manually retract a slide that has failed?

Most systems have a manual override, and the method differs by system: a crank input on some gear drives, a release on hydraulic systems, a disengagement procedure on Schwintek. Get the room in before moving the vehicle, then bring it in. Driving with a room partially extended damages the seals and the rails.

### How much does slide seal replacement cost?

Four hundred to three thousand dollars across 2 to 14 hours, depending on how many rooms, how long they are and whether the trim has to come off to reach the retainer. Alignment is checked at the same time, since a new seal on a misaligned room is consumed in a season.

### My slide leaks only when it rains hard. Is the seal bad?

Possibly, but check the topper and the roof line above it first. Water sheeting off the roof at volume can overrun a seal that handles normal rain fine, especially if the slide topper is missing, torn or sagging so it pools instead of shedding.

### Do you work on hydraulic slide systems?

Yes. Hydraulic systems fail at the pump, the solenoid valves, the cylinders and the lines, and they share a reservoir with the leveling jacks on many coaches, so a slide symptom and a jack symptom often have the same root cause.
