# Making a Repair Disappear Without Painting the Whole Side

> Spot repair refinishes a limited area and fades the new colour into the surrounding panels so no edge is visible. It runs $500 to $5,000 across 4 to 25 hours. The skill is not in spraying the repair, it is in deciding how far the blend has to travel before the eye stops seeing a transition.

## Why can you not just paint the damaged spot?

Because two mixes of the same colour code are never identical in the eye, and a hard edge between them is exactly where the eye looks. Paint ages, pigments shift, and the panel next to your repair has been in Southern California sun for years. A perfect formula match to the original code will still be visibly different against that panel.

Blending solves it by never creating an edge. The new colour is applied at full opacity over the repair, then progressively lighter as it moves outward, so that at the far side of the blend zone there is a gradual transition rather than a line. The eye cannot resolve a gradient the way it resolves an edge.

Clear coat then goes over the whole panel, or the whole set of panels, to a natural break. That break is the second half of the trick: a body line, a seam, a rub rail, a corner radius or a door edge. Clear stopped in open sheet metal leaves a visible halo. Clear taken to a break is invisible.

## How is the blend zone decided?

By colour type and by the geometry of the vehicle, in that order.

Solid colours blend short. There is no metallic flake to lay differently, so the transition is only about colour, and a modest zone works. Metallics blend long, because the flake orientation depends on how the paint went down and a short blend produces a visible change in how the panel flashes as you walk past it. Pearls blend longest, because the mid coat's colour depends on how many coats went on, and matching that across a transition takes distance.

Geometry then decides where the blend can end. On a coach, panels are large and breaks are far apart, so a blend that starts at a repair in the middle of a sidewall may have to travel to the next seam whether that is two feet away or eight. On a van with defined body lines and separate panels, the breaks come naturally.

This is why the same size scratch costs very differently on two vehicles. A dinner plate sized repair on a white cargo van is a fraction of the same repair on a metallic full body paint coach where the nearest break is at the next bay door.

## What does the process look like on the floor?

- **Colour identification and spray out.** The formula is pulled, adjusted against the actual panel, and sprayed on a test card. The card is checked against the vehicle under booth light and under daylight before anything goes on the coach.

- **Repair and prep.** The damage itself is repaired, filled where needed, primed and blocked. The blend zone is sanded and scuffed to accept colour and clear.

- **Masking to breaks.** The zone is masked back to a body line or seam rather than taped in open surface, and adjacent areas are protected.

- **Colour and fade.** Full coverage over the repair, then progressively lighter passes outward, letting each flash off so the flake settles consistently.

- **Clear across the panel.** Clear applied over the full masked area to the break, not just over the colour.

- **Cut and polish.** The blend edge is levelled and polished so the finished surface reads as one continuous panel.

Paint labour posts at $210 per hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour, so a long blend on a large coach carries materials cost proportional to the zone rather than to the damage.

## When is blending the wrong answer?

Three cases. First, when the existing finish is failing. Blending fresh paint into oxidized, chalking or peeling clear puts a good repair next to a bad surface, and the surface fails around it. Third, when there are several repairs on the same side. Three blends across one sidewall usually cost more than refinishing the sidewall, and the refinished panel looks better.

Before you call, park the vehicle in direct sun and look at the panel from a shallow angle, then look at the same panel in shade. ## Questions

### Will I be able to see where the repair was?

The standard is that it reads as original from three feet in normal light. Under a raking light at a shallow angle a trained eye can often find the zone on a metallic, which is true of any blended repair on any vehicle, and it is why the blend is mapped to a break rather than stopped in open surface.

### Why does the estimate cover panels that are not damaged?

Because the blend has to travel into them for the repair to be invisible, and clear has to run to a natural break. Those panels are being sprayed, so the hours and the materials for them are real. Leaving them out is how a cheap estimate becomes a visible repair.

### Can you match a colour with no paint code?

Yes. Where the code is missing, illegible or the vehicle has been repainted, the colour is read from the panel and matched by spray out cards, adjusting until the card disappears against the vehicle in two light sources. That process is the core of custom colour matching.

### Does a blend hold up as well as a full panel repaint?

Yes, when the blend zone was properly prepared and the clear was carried to a break. Blend failures almost always trace back to insufficient surface preparation in the fade zone or clear stopped in open surface where its edge had nothing to key into.
