A wax or a synthetic sealant is a sacrificial layer resting on the surface, and it washes and weathers off over weeks to months. A ceramic coating cures into a hard, cross linked layer that is chemically attached to the finish, so it stays until it is abraded or degraded rather than until it is washed away. Practically that gives three things. Ultraviolet load is taken by the coating instead of by the clear coat or the gelcoat, which is the one that matters most on a vehicle stored outdoors here. Contaminants sit on top of a slick surface instead of keying into it, so bug residue, sap and road film release with far less mechanical effort. And washing gets less damaging, because less pressure and less scrubbing are needed, and wash induced swirls are the largest single source of finish damage on any vehicle. What it does not do is make a surface scratch proof or eliminate the need to wash. A coating raises the threshold; it does not remove it. ## Why does timing matter so much on fresh paint? Because refinished paint continues to release solvent for a period after it is dry to the touch. Sealing it under a coating before that finishes traps the solvent, and the film underneath can haze, soften or shrink unevenly. The coating then has to be removed by abrasion, which means correcting the panel again. So on a refinished vehicle the sequence is fixed: spray, cure fully, correct, then coat. That is why coating is scheduled as a return visit on a full refinish rather than as the final hour of the paint job, and why the estimate treats it as a separate operation. On a vehicle with existing paint the timing question does not apply, but the preparation question does, and it is bigger. A coating locks in the surface it is applied to, permanently as far as an owner is concerned. Swirls, etching and oxidation under a coating stay under it. That is why [correction and polishing](/services/paint-refinishing/paint-correction-polishing/) always precedes application, and why the correction step is usually more hours than the coating step. ## What does application involve on a vehicle this size? - **Decontamination.** Wash, chemical decontamination for iron and organic fallout, then a mechanical clay stage so the surface is genuinely clean rather than merely washed. - **Correction.** Whatever level of cutting and polishing the surface needs, since everything present gets locked in. - **Panel wipe.** A solvent wipe that removes every trace of polishing oils. Oils left behind are the reason a coating fails to bond in patches and shows as high spots. - **Application in sections.** The coating is applied panel by panel, levelled within its flash window, and inspected under a light from multiple angles before moving on. Missing the levelling window leaves high spots that must be polished off. - **Cure.** The vehicle stays dry and indoors while the coating cross links. Rain or washing during that window compromises the layer. Detail labour is $95 per hour, and the surface area of a coach is the reason a job that takes an afternoon on a car takes days here. Roofs and horizontal surfaces take the heaviest ultraviolet load and are the areas most worth coating. ## Is it worth it on your vehicle? It comes down to storage and to what the surface is. - **Stored outdoors, kept long term.** Strong case. The coating is taking ultraviolet damage that would otherwise be consuming clear coat or gelcoat, and clear coat is not renewable without refinishing. - **Freshly refinished.** Strong case, since protecting a $5,000 to $35,000 refinish is proportionate spending. - **Covered storage, occasional use.** Weaker case. The coating still helps with washing, but the ultraviolet argument is much smaller. - **Oxidized gelcoat.** Fix that first. Until the finish has fully cured, which depends on the product system and shop conditions rather than a calendar rule. It is scheduled as a return visit so the paint gets its full window, and the same visit includes the correction pass the coating needs to sit on. ### Can a coating go over gelcoat? Yes, and it is one of the better uses of one, since gelcoat has no ultraviolet inhibitor package to speak of. The condition of the gelcoat decides everything: it has to be compounded and polished back to sound material first, because whatever is under the coating stays there. ### Do I still need to wash the vehicle? Yes, and washing gets easier rather than unnecessary. The slick surface releases contamination with less pressure, which means fewer wash induced swirls.
