# RV Interior Repair and Remodeling Services

> Interior services cover everything inside the shell: cabinetry, countertops, flooring and subfloor, wall and ceiling panels, upholstery, furniture and lighting. One service line sits here, interior remodeling and repair, which spans a single cabinet door through a full layout redesign at 20 to 250 hours of labor.

## Why do RV interiors fail differently than house interiors?

Because the building moves. A house sits still on a foundation. A coach twists, flexes and vibrates continuously for hundreds of miles at a time, and every joint inside it is loaded and unloaded thousands of times per trip.

The consequences are specific. Cabinet face frames are usually stapled and glued rather than joined, so the staples work loose and the glue line opens at the corners. Countertop seams crack. Wall panels, which are thin luan or vinyl-faced board, separate from the framing at the fastener line. Flooring installed edge to edge with no expansion allowance buckles at the slide opening, which is where the floor flexes most.

Weight discipline is the other constraint. Every pound added to an interior comes off the cargo carrying capacity, and owners who install granite countertops and tile floors on a half ton chassis find out at the scale. Interior work here is quoted with weight in mind: quartz over granite, luxury vinyl plank over ceramic tile, plywood over solid stock where the span allows it.

Full interior remodel runs $1,500 to $50,000 across 20 to 250 hours, which reflects how far the work can scale. Cabinetry alone runs $500 to $7,500 across 4 to 35 hours. See the [posted price sheet](/prices/) for the full band list.

## What does water find on the inside?

Water almost never announces itself where it entered. It enters at a roof seam, a window frame, a clearance light or a slide seal, runs down the inside of the wall cavity, and shows up as a soft floor twenty feet away or a stained ceiling panel in the next room.

The order of failure is predictable. First the luan substrate absorbs moisture and loses stiffness. Then the adhesive bond between substrate and outer skin releases, which is the beginning of delamination. Then framing, whether wood or aluminum with wood blocking, starts to rot or corrode at the fastener points. Then the subfloor, which on most units is a laminated sandwich, turns soft in the middle while the top surface still looks fine.

Finding the source is a separate operation from fixing the damage. Moisture meter readings across the wall map out the wet zone, and a pressurized leak test or a controlled water test isolates the entry point. Repairing interior finish without closing the entry point produces a repeat visit, so the roof, window or seal work is always scoped alongside the interior work. Water damage restoration and subfloor replacement runs $750 to $15,000 across 4 to 60 hours, and it commonly pairs with [roof repair](/services/roof-repair/).

## What can be rebuilt versus replaced?

Rebuild is usually cheaper and always heavier on labor. Replacement is faster and dependent on parts availability, which for discontinued interior components is often the deciding factor.

**Cabinet boxes**:
Almost always rebuilt or refaced. The boxes are structural and tied into the wall framing; pulling one out can require removing the countertop and the wall panel behind it. Refacing with new doors and drawer fronts changes the look for a fraction of a replacement.

**Countertops**:
Replaced. The material has failed at a seam or a sink cutout, and repair on a laminated or solid surface top rarely holds. Countertop work runs $500 to $7,500 across 4 to 35 hours.

**Flooring**:
Replaced. Once the wear layer is through, patching reads as a patch. Subfloor underneath is repaired in sections where the damage is localized.

**Furniture**:
Either. Theater seating and sofas with failed mechanisms are usually replaced. Frames that are sound with worn fabric get reupholstered, which also lets the owner choose a material that handles sun exposure better than the original.

**Wall and ceiling panels**:
Replaced in full sheets to a seam. Patching a vinyl-faced panel leaves a visible line no matter how careful the work is, because the texture and the sheen never quite match.

The service line that handles all of this is [interior remodeling and repair](/services/interior-remodeling/), which breaks down into seven specific areas from full remodels through lighting upgrades.

## How is a full layout redesign scoped?

A layout redesign starts with three questions: what has to stay, what the vehicle weighs now, and where the systems run. Everything else is negotiable.

What has to stay is usually the wet bay plumbing runs, the furnace ducting, the electrical distribution panel and the slide openings. Moving a slide opening is structural work and belongs to a different category entirely. Moving a bathroom means moving black tank plumbing, which on most floorplans means the tank moves too.

Weight gets calculated before material selection, not after. The gross vehicle weight rating and the current scaled weight set the budget, and every material choice draws against it. Owners who plan to add a lithium house bank later need that reserved now.

Systems routing gets mapped during teardown. Wall panels come off, wiring and plumbing get photographed in place, and the new layout is drawn against the actual routing rather than a manufacturer diagram that may or may not match what left the factory. Cabinetry is then built to the measured openings in shop. That sequence is why a redesign is quoted after teardown and why the range is as wide as it is.

## Questions

### Can you build custom cabinetry to match my existing finish?

Yes. New cabinet faces are built and finished in shop to match the existing stain and sheen. Matching an aged finish takes sample panels and adjustment, because the original has ambered with ultraviolet exposure and a fresh coat of the original stain reads noticeably lighter.

### How do I know if my subfloor is soft?

Walk the floor barefoot in socks and feel for flex, particularly along slide openings, in front of the entry door and around the wet bay. Any spot that gives underfoot or sounds hollow when tapped needs a moisture meter reading before it gets covered by new flooring.

### Will new flooring add much weight?

Luxury vinyl plank adds roughly the same as the vinyl it replaces. Ceramic tile and stone add substantially more and also crack at flex points. On a chassis that is already close to its rating, flooring choice is a real engineering decision rather than a style preference.
