## Where do you start on a remodel that has no obvious starting point?

With three constraints, established before any material is chosen: what the vehicle weighs, where the systems run, and what cannot move.

Weight first. Every coach has a gross vehicle weight rating and a cargo carrying capacity, and the remodel draws against the second one. Owners who install stone countertops and tile floors discover this at a scale house. A quartz slab is lighter than granite and thinner sections are available. Luxury vinyl plank is close to the weight of the vinyl it replaces. Solid hardwood cabinet doors are heavier than a veneered panel that looks identical from three feet. Those trade-offs get made deliberately at the start rather than discovered at the end.

Systems routing second. Wall panels come off during teardown and the wiring, plumbing, ducting and propane runs get photographed in place. Factory diagrams are a starting point and frequently do not reflect what actually left the plant. Designing a new layout against the drawing instead of against the vehicle is how a cabinet ends up over a furnace duct.

What cannot move third. Slide openings are structural. Black tank plumbing wants gravity. The distribution panel wants to stay near the shore inlet. The wet bay is where it is. ## Why do RV cabinets come apart the way they do?

Because they were built for weight, not for the loads they actually see. Factory cabinetry is typically thin plywood or particle board with vinyl or thermofoil facing, joined with staples and glue, and hung on the wall framing with screws into blocking.

Three failures dominate. Face frame corners open, because a stapled butt joint has almost no resistance to racking and the coach racks constantly. Hinges pull out, because a European cup hinge screwed into particle board has very little to hold onto once the fibers crush. Thermofoil delaminates from the door substrate, especially near the range and the water heater, because heat softens the adhesive.

The repair choices are refacing, rebuilding or replacing. Refacing keeps the boxes and swaps the doors, drawer fronts and end panels, which is by far the best value when the boxes are sound: the look changes completely and the structural work stays minimal. Rebuilding means reworking the boxes themselves, adding corner blocks, replacing hinge substrate with solid stock and re-hanging. Replacing means new boxes built in shop to the measured openings, which is where a remodel gets expensive because the countertop and often the wall panel come off with them.

## What has to happen before new flooring goes down?

The subfloor gets verified. Installing over a soft subfloor produces a floor that flexes, then a seam that opens, then a callback. On laminated subfloor construction the top skin can feel solid while the core underneath has turned to pulp.

Verification is a moisture meter across the whole floor, with attention to the four places water collects: the slide openings, the entry step well, the wet bay wall and the base of the shower. Anything reading elevated gets opened. Where the core is gone, the section is cut out and replaced with matching thickness material, tied into the framing rather than floated.

Then expansion. A floating floor needs a perimeter gap because the material moves with temperature, and an RV parked in Southern California sun sees a wide daily swing. Flooring butted tight to the cabinets buckles at the slide opening, which is the point of greatest flex. Transitions at slide rooms need a detail that tolerates the room moving in and out over the floor edge thousands of times.

## How does upholstery selection change on a vehicle?

Sun exposure and abrasion drive it. A sofa in a house sees indirect light. A dinette in a coach sits under a window that faces whatever direction the vehicle is parked in, which over years is every direction, for hours at a time, through glass that does not block much ultraviolet.

Materials that hold up are solution-dyed acrylics, high grade polyurethane synthetics and marine-oriented vinyls. Materials that do not are pigment-printed cottons and bonded leather, which is a thin polyurethane layer over a fabric backing and which peels in sheets after a few seasons of heat cycling. Genuine leather holds up well but wants conditioning, which most owners will not do on schedule.

Foam matters as much as fabric. Factory seating often uses a low density foam that compresses permanently within a couple of seasons of use. Replacing the fabric over collapsed foam produces a seat that looks new and feels the same as it did before. Reupholstery here includes new foam specified to the seat's actual use.

Frames are the third element. Theater seating with failed recline mechanisms is usually replaced rather than repaired, because the mechanism is the expensive part and it is rarely serviceable. Dinette and sofa frames that are sound get rebuilt and recovered, which is both lighter on the budget and lighter on the cargo capacity than new furniture.

## Questions

### Can you remodel just one area, like the kitchen?

Yes, and it is often the smart approach. A galley refresh with new countertop, backsplash, sink and cabinet faces changes the feel of the whole coach for a fraction of a full remodel, and it does not require pulling the wall panels through the rest of the unit.

### How long does a full interior remodel take?

Twenty to two hundred fifty labor hours depending on scope. Calendar time depends on material lead times, especially on solid surface countertops and custom upholstery, both of which are made to order. Teardown happens first so the scope is firm before materials are ordered.

### Will you match my existing cabinet finish?

Yes, using sample panels held against the existing work in daylight. Matching an aged finish means adjusting the stain toward what the wood has become rather than reproducing the original formula, which will read too light next to twenty year old ambered varnish.

### Can you convert a bunk room into an office?

Regularly. The constraints are the window positions, the wall framing and where power can be run. Desks, cabinetry and seating are built in shop to the measured space, and the electrical work for outlets and lighting is scoped alongside it rather than added afterward.
