## What is your slide actually telling you?

Match the symptom to the likely cause before spending money on parts.

- **Clicking or ratcheting with no movement.** On a Schwintek this usually means a motor has lost synchronisation or gear teeth have stripped. Continuing to cycle it makes the damage worse.

- **Room extends crooked, one end leading.** Synchronisation on a two motor system, or a stretched cable on a cable slide. Forcing it square by hand damages the wall opening.

- **Grinding.** Metal on metal contact somewhere in the drive. Stop and have it looked at, because grinding is how a repairable gear becomes a replaced rail.

- **Moves slowly, then stalls partway.** Low voltage under load is a common culprit, especially with a tired house battery bank. Slides draw heavily and are unforgiving of weak batteries.

## When does a slide problem become a structural repair?

When the room itself has failed rather than the thing that moves it. A slide room is a box with its own floor, walls and roof, and it takes weather on all sides while extended. Water gets in at the top seal, soaks the room floor, and the floor sags. A sagging room binds in the opening, and the mechanism that has been fighting that bind for two seasons is the part that finally breaks.

Replacing the motor on that vehicle solves nothing. Slide room rebuild and structural repair runs $1,500 to $7,500 and 10 to 35 labor hours, and it involves opening the room, replacing wet decking and framing, and resetting the room square before the drive components go back.

The tell is at the floor edge. Walk to the outer edge of an extended slide and press down. If the floor gives noticeably at the outer corners, the room has taken water, and the mechanism conversation is premature.

## Is a slide topper worth putting back on?

Yes, on any slide that spends real time extended outdoors. A topper is a fabric awning over the slide roof that keeps debris and standing water off the top seal. Without one, pine needles and leaf litter collect on the slide roof, hold moisture against the seal and the sealant, and that is the leak path that eventually costs a room rebuild.

Topper replacement runs $450 to $1,800 and 3 to 8 labor hours, which is inexpensive relative to what it prevents. The common failure is fabric that has gone brittle and split along the roller, or a torsion spring in the roller that has lost tension so the fabric sags and pools water.

Hydraulic systems have a manual release on the pump. Getting the room in far enough to travel safely is the priority; do not drive with a slide partially extended.

### Why does my slide leak only when it rains hard?

Because the wiper seal handles running water but not driven water. Under wind pressure, water finds the top corners where the wiper, bulb and D seals meet, and any gap in that transition lets it in. The fix is usually seal replacement plus resetting the room so it sits square in the opening and loads the seals evenly.

### Can a Schwintek system be converted to something else?

Rarely worth it. The in wall design integrates with the sidewall structure, so converting to a through frame system means rebuilding the wall and the floor. The more productive path is correcting whatever is causing the bind, keeping the tracks clean and the room square, and replacing worn drive components with the correct parts.
